Track & Field Teams Take Second at Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic;
Hockey Team Wraps Up MCHC West Division Title
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's track and field team had a strong performance Friday afternoon at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Track and Field Classic at Aquinas College.
Competing against Aquinas, Davenport and Aquinas, the Knights took second place with 157 points with Aquinas taking the team title with 174 points. Davenport was third with 143 while Cornerstone was fourth with 66 points.
Calvin had several super individual efforts highlighted by the performance of junior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) who captured the 400 meters with a time of 49.37. His winning time currently ranks third on the NCAA III Indoor performance list.
Valentine was one of two Knights to score in the 400 meters as junior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was sixth in 52.33.
Valentine was one of six individual champions for the Knights Friday. Senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) came up with a sensational performance in the 3,000 meters, winning the race in a season-best time of 8:36.46. Kramer won the race in the final 20 meters, passing a competitor down the stretch to win by just under a second. The time places Kramer 20th on the NCAA III Track and Field performance list in the event. Kramer led a 1-5-7-8 Calvin finish as junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) was fifth (9:00.73), junior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional HS) seventh (9:00.73) and sophomore Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) eighth (9:08.98).
Freshman Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian Academy) also claimed a win in the long jump, winning with a leap of 21-8 3/4. He was part of a one-two Calvin finish as freshman Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Il.) was second with a jump of 21-6 1/4.
Barents was a big point producer for the Knights Friday, also placing second in the triple jump (42-5 1/2). He was part of a 2-3-5 Calvin finish in the event with senior Jeiel Burrell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking third (42-0 1/5) while freshman Andrew Huston (Elgin, Il./Harvest Academy) was fifth (38-3 1/2).
Burrell added a fourth place finish in the high jump, hitting a height of 6-1 1/4.
In the pole vault, junior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) and freshman Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) tied for sixth with vaults of 13-9 1/4.
In the weight throw, sophomore Brendan Van Houten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored points with a seventh place finish with a throw of 48-7 1/4.
On the track, Calvin scored well in the 60 meter hurdles as junior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) was fourth with a season-best time of 8.82 while junior Jeremiah Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was fifth (9:03) and sophomore Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) was sixth (9.06).
Calvin's fourth individual champion came from the blazing feet of freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) won the mile run in a season-best time of 4:24.05 as he claimed the lead and eventually the win in the final 100 meters. Senior Nathan Van Haitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) was close behind in second with a season-best time of 4:25.05 while freshman Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was third in a season-best time of 4:25.91.
Calvin's fifth individual win came in the 800 meters as sophomore James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) took first in a season-best time of 1:59.02 while freshman teammate Nathan Anderson (Milan, Mich./Milan HS) was eighth (2:03.63).
In the 5,000 meters, junior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) led a 1-2-4-6 Calvin finish, winning in a time of 15:28.94. Senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was second (15:30.47), senior Robbie Hohlman (Naperville, Il./ Neuqua Valley HS) fourth (15:44.83) and freshman Nathan Swaim (Grafton, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) sixth (16:21.50).
In the 600 meters, sophomore Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was second (1:25.60). In the 1000 meters, senior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, Il./Mahomet-Seymour HS) was fourth (2:38.14), junior Hendrik Vermeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School) was sixth (2:38.81) and senior Duncan Henderson (Crystal Lake, Il./Crystal Lake South HS) seventh (2:49.97).
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of Buteyn, Jeninga, Peterson and Valentine closed out the night with a fourth place finish in a time of 3:28.67.
"We had a great night all the way around," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "After interim break, it was great to have a full complement of squad members back. You could feel the energy tonight and our guys stepped up and performed well. The encouraging thing that I see is that there is still even more room for improvement. We are definitely headed in the right direction and tonight was a real momentum building for the final stretch of our indoor season."
Calvin will return to Aquinas next Friday to compete at the Aquinas College Little Big Meet beginning at 5 p.m.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's track and field had a strong set of performances at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Aquinas College Friday night, finishing second with a team score of 128.50 points. Host Aquinas took first with 210 points with Davenport third with 112 points and Cornerstone fourth with 87.50 points.
Junior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) took home one of the Calvin victories, winning the triple jump with a career-best leap of 36-7 that places her 23rd on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field performance list. She also placed third in the 60 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 9.00 while also tossing the shot put in competition for the first time, tossing the steel ball 24-1 3/4 that was good for 10th place.
In the triple jump, Dyksen was part of a one-three Calvin finish as sophomore Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was third (32-8 1/4). In the 60 meter hurdles, junior Bethany Van Eck (Clifton, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was eighth (9.78).
Senior Bethany Love (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood HS) took Calvin's other win, claiming the shot put with a season-best throw of 40-10 1/4. Love was part of a one-two Calvin finish in the event as senior Michaela Meckes (Bay City, Mich./Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was second with a career-best throw of 40-4. Love added an eighth place throw of 43-8 in the weight throw.
Senior Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had a strong race in the 5,000 meters, placing second wtih a time of 18:48.14 while sophomore Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was fifth (19:34.70), junior Kate MCLain (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS sixth (19:52.20) and freshman Lindy Anderson (Milan, Mich./Milan HS) eighth (21:10.26).
In the 60 meter dash, freshman Jackie Amissah-Nunoo (Accra, Ghana/Ghana International School) was fourth in a time of 8.21.
In the mile run, sophomore Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) was third (5:15.95), junior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) sixth (5:33.49) and freshman Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) seventh (5:34.63).
Junior Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) had a big night, taking second in the 400 meters (1:01.70) and third in the 200 meters (27.50).
Freshman Margaret Van Wylen (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was eighth in the 800 meters (2:33.85).
In the 3,000 meters, freshman Kristen Lundberg (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian HS) was third in a time of 10:46.15 while freshman Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth (10:59.19).
In the high jump, Van Eck was fourth (4-11 3/4) while freshman Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) was tied for fifth (4-9 3/4).
Calvin also scored in the pole vault with sophomore Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) taking third (9-9) and sophomore Annalane Miller (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) taking fourth (9-3).
Freshman Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) added a fifth place leap in the long jump (16-2).
"I was very pleased with the way we competed tonight," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "We have a relatively young team mixed in with a few key veterans. I thought everyone worked well together and the increased energy from having a (near) full team after interim was fun. We are headed in a positive direction and looking forward to continue our improvement."
Calvin will return to Aquinas next Friday to compete at the Aquinas College Little Big Meet beginning at 5 p.m.
ACHA ICE HOCKEY
The Calvin ACHA hockey team wrapped up the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference West Division title for the second consecutive year on Friday night, defeating cross-town rival Aquinas College 4-3 at the Southside Ice Arena.
Calvin led 1-0 and later 3-1 but the host Saints came back to tie the game each time. Senior Jordan Duncan (Oshawa, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal on a pretty give-and-go play with senior Ryan Betts (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with 7:41 left in the third period.
The Knights made the 4-3 lead stand up the rest of the way to improve to 24-1-1 overall and 12-1-0 in league play.
Calvin will host Aquinas in the return matchup Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Eagles Ice Center. The game will also serve as Senior Night for Calvin's senior class.
