Swimming and Diving Teams Down Kalamazoo;
Track and Field Teams Compete at GVSU Mike Lints Invitational
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The women's swimming & diving team moved to 4-1 in the MIAA with a road victory over Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon. The Knights defeated the Hornets, 168-129. Calvin won eight events on the day.
"Good afternoon of good old fashioned racing," said Calvin head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We were able to tie our laces and put up one good honest effort. We are happy to be finished with the duals and get into championship season, which is what we wait all year for."
Sophomore Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif.) picked up the first Calvin victory of the day in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:58.13.
The Knights had the three-fastest times in the 200-yard freestyle on Saturday. Sophomore Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) touched the wall first at 1:58.86, in second place was sophomore Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) at 2:00.36 and in third place was freshman Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) at 2:02.69.
Calvin recorded the four-fastest times in the 50-yard freestyle. Junior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the way at 24.73. Freshman Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) recorded a second-place finish at 25.17, in third place was junior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) at 25.38 and in fourth was junior Ana Estrella (Hudsonville, Mich./Calvin Christian) at 26.01. Van Harn won her second event of the day in the 100-yard freestyle at 53.76. In second place was Rachel Mattson at 55.84 and in third place was 55.93.
Junior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) won the 1-meter diving event at 268.90.
The Maroon and Gold went one-two-three in the 200-yard backstroke on Saturday. Freshman Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) recorded a winning time of 2:13.15. In second place was freshman Emily Slenk (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Madelyn Smith clocked in at 2:18.60.
Kendall Murphy picked up her second victory of the day in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:24.22. Anna Serino checked in at 5:25.16 in second place.
Calvin closed the day winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Emily Gunderson, freshman Anna Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee), Rachel Mattson and Madelyn Smith won at 1:40.28.
The Knights return to action on Feb. 15 for the four-day MIAA Championships in Holland, Michigan. The competition will take place in the Holland Aquatic Center.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The men's swimming & diving team improved to 4-1 in the MIAA with a victory at Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon. The Knights swatted the Hornets on Saturday, 168.5-127.5. Calvin won nine races on the day.

The Knights started the day with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of senior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville), freshman Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), senior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) and sophomore Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) won at 1:37.58.
The Maroon and Gold went one-two in the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the way at 1:50.63 and freshman Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central) was in second place at 1:51.23.
Calvin would then notch the three-fastest times in the 100-yard backstroke. Brett Stoughton won at 55.61, in second was freshman Tristan Hazlett (Lutz, Fla.) at 59.72 and junior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) at 1:00.39. Stoughton was also victorious in the 100-yard butterfly at 52.91.
Sophomore Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:02.11.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Ben Holstege touched the wall first at 48.04.
The Knights had the three-fastest times in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Steven Tarske (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) won at 2:05.95, in second place was sophomore Brady Boehm (Chisholm, Minn./Hibbing) at 2:17.36 and in third place was junior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) at 2:13.38.
Fear Churchwell clocked in a winning time of 2:18.40 in the 200-yard breaststroke and earned the final Calvin victory of the day in the 400-yard I.M. at 4:26.48.

Calvin scored 5.6 points to finish 20th in the final team standings.
Notable performances for the Calvin women included:
*Senior Bethany Love (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) placing eighth in the shot put (39-5 1/4).
*Freshman Kristen Lundberg (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian HS) placing 13th in the 5,000 meters (18:43.52).
*Junior Bethany Van Eck (Cliffton NJ/Eastern Christian HS clocking a time of 10.12 in the 60 meter hurdles and taking second in the high jump (5-1 1/4).
*Senior Michaela Meckes (Bay City, Mich./Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) taking 16th in the shot put (37-2 1/2).
*Senior Autumn Vonk (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) clocking a time of 11"32/11 in the 3,000 meters.
With the start of second semester on Monday, Calvin's full team will now prepare to compete at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Track and Field Classic next Friday at Aquinas College.

*Sophomore James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) running 51.57 in the 400 meters.
*Senior Robbie Holhman (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) running 15:32.15 in the 5,000 meters.
*Junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) running 8:37.00 and junior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) running 8:50.73 in the 3,000 meters.
*Freshman Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) vaulting 14-1 3/4 in the pole vault.
*Freshman Jayvin Wolf (Middleton, Mich./Fulton HS) throwing 40-3 1/2 in the shot put and 40-8 3/4 in the weight throw.
