MEN'S SOCCER
KANSAS CITY, Mo.- The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced on Thursday the Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award recipients for the Fall 2016 high school and college seasons and the Calvin men's soccer team has been so honored. Today's awards recognize a total of 164 teams across the country for exhibiting fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game.
The Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award is given to NSCAA members at four levels. Teams honored at the platinum level went an entire season without a player or coach receiving a yellow card or red card. Teams honored at the gold (1-10%), silver (11-30%) and bronze (31-50%) levels are based on a percentage calculated by the total number of cards received by players/coaches divided by the team's total number of games played.
Led by head coach Ryan Souders, the Calvin men's soccer team was honored at the silver level. In 26 total games played, Calvin received just five yellow cards and no red cards during the recently completed 2016 season.
"I'm really proud of this team accomplishment," said Souders. "It is great to see that teams can be successful on the field and still play clean. Achieving this award has been one of our team goals and we are glad to have reached it."
Calvin advanced all the way to the 2016 Division III National Championship final before falling to Tufts 1-0 in double-overtime. The Knights finished 23-3-0 on the season, claiming MIAA regular season and MIAA Tournament titles along the way. Calvin then won five consecutive NCAA III Tournament games to reach the NCAA III Championship final for the third time in program history.
