CALVIN MOURNS THE LOSS OF FORMER COACH AND PROFESSOR
Calvin College mourns the loss of former coach Karla Wolters who passed away on Monday, November 28, 2016. She was 65.
A 1973 graduate of Hope College, Wolters spent the final 23 years of her collegiate career teaching and coaching at Hope.
Prior to coaching at Hope however, Wolters spent more than a decade teaching and coaching at Calvin College, serving as a head coach in women's basketball, women's volleyball and women's softball. She twice led the Calvin volleyball team to the national semifinals and in 1986, all the way to the national championship final.
She led Calvin softball teams to the NCAA III Tournament four times including the NCAA III World Series in 1987.
After the 1986-87 academic year, Wolters returned to her alma mater to teach and coach where she led Hope teams to numerous achievements and accolades.
In 2009 as part of a reunion with the 1986 Calvin women's volleyball team that earned national runners-up status, Wolters was given "Honorary Calvin Knight" honors.

The Calvin women's volleyball team recently wrapped up its 2016 season with a national championship. Earlier in the fall, the Calvin Sports Information office caught up with Calvin seniors Kielley Lemkuil, Laura Danhoff and Kelly Bos to reflect on their time at Calvin.

MEN'S SOCCER
The Calvin men's soccer team is headed to the NCAA III Tournament semifinals this weekend in Salem, Virginia. The Knights will face Brandeis University (Mass.) in a semifinal game at 1:30 p.m.
Earlier in the fall, the Calvin Sports Information office caught up with Calvin seniors Stephan Hooker, Isky Van Doorne and David Waterson to reflect on their time at Calvin.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 89, Carthage 83
KENOSHA, Wis. - The Calvin men's basketball team improved to 2-3 on the year with a victory at Carthage on Tuesday night. The Knights defeated the Redmen, 88-83. Calvin shot a season-high .516 from the field on Tuesday and drained a season-high nine three-point baskets. Carthage falls to 3-2.
"It was great tonight," said head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "I was really proud of the guys. Carthage is a good team and tonight was a physical game. We just continue to get better, we just have to keep getting more experience."
The Knights jumped out to an early lead in the first half, tied at four with 16:54 left, Calvin went on a 5-0 run with a layup from senior Nick Kronemeyer (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) and a three-point basketball from senior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell). The Knights would push the lead up to seven on several occasions before the Redmen would fight back. Carthage and Calvin would exchange the lead for the last seven minutes of the first half and Carthage would hold onto a one-point lead at halftime at 46-45.
After a Carthage layup, Calvin would start the second half on a 6-0 run. The two teams would play each other tight the next 14 minutes, with neither team building a lead bigger than four points. With 3:21 remaining, Calvin would go on a 5-0 run. Nick Kronemeyer scored three points the old fashioned way and Cam Denney drained a jump shot with 2:46 left. Junior Tony Canonie (South Haven, Mich./South Haven) gave Calvin an eight-point lead with 1:25 left on the clock. The Knights would seal the victory with five free throws to take the game 88-83.
The Knights owned the glass on Tuesday with 43 rebounds and only allowed Carthage 26 rebounds. Calvin shot a season-high .516 from the field on Tuesday and drained a season-high nine three-point baskets, shooting .474 from behind the arc.
Nick Kronemeyer finished with a career-high 19 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Tuesday was the first-career double-double for Kronemeyer. He also finished with a season-high three assists.
Sophomore Luke Van Boxel (Montague, Mich./Montague) didn't miss a shot on Tuesday and recorded a career-high 11 points.
Sophomore Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) tallied 11 points against Carthage.
Freshman Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) notched a career-high nine points on Tuesday evening.
Senior Michael Welch (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) finished with eight rebounds, that ties his season-high.
Tony Canonie had a game-high two steals and was one of three Knights with three assists.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, when they return to Wisconsin and face UW-Oshkosh.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Knights are ranked 24th in the first regular season poll of the year, released Monday evening.
Under the direction of head coach Chuck Winkelman, the Knights are off to a 6-0 start to the season and will travel to rival Hope on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game at DeVos Fieldhouse that will serve as the conference opener for both teams.
Wednesday's game will serve as a meeting of nationally-ranked and undefeated teams. Hope is currently 5-0 on the year and ranked 10th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
