Women's Basketball Powers Past Finlandia;
Men's Basketball Falls to Cornerstone

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 82, Finlandia 52

HANCOCK, Mich. - The Calvin women's basketball team improved to 5-0 on the year with an 82-52 victory at Finlandia. The Lions fall to 1-2 on the year.
The Knights grabbed a hold of the lead in the first quarter and would not give it up the rest of the way.
Calvin would go into halftime leading, 39-29.
The Maroon and Gold would run-away with the second half, outscoring the Lions, 43-23.
Junior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) finished with a game-high 18 points. She went 6-7 from the field, including one three-point basket.
Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) drained all eight of her shots on Friday and finished with 16 points. She also tallied three blocks.
Senior Anna Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) had a game-high 15 rebounds and scored 14 points. Friday was the 11th-career double-double for Timmer.
Junior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and freshman Sydney Houlemard (Covington, La./Covington) both finished with four assists. Luurtsema also had 11 points in the victory.
Sophomore Logan Winton (Fairview, Mich./Fairview) also made all of her shots on Friday and recorded a career-high six-points.
The Knights owned the boards on Friday, winning the rebounding battle, 41-26.
Calvin shot 69.4% on Friday night.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they face Carroll (Wisc.) in Hancock, Michigan.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Cornerstone 83, Calvin 55

HOLLAND, Mich. - Calvin opened play at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic with an 83-55 defeat to Cornerstone University Friday night at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse.

Ranked No. 8 in the latest NAIA Divison II national poll, Cornerstone (7-1) hit 9 of its first 13 field goal attempts to grab the early momentum.

Calvin (1-2) got within 11 at 36-25 with 2:37 remaining in the first half but Cornerstone answered with a 9-2 run to take a 42-27 halftime lead.

Cornerstone opened the second half with an 8-2 scoring run and kept the Knights at distance the rest of the game.

Senior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell HS) led Calvin in defeat with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists while junior Michael Wilks (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HAD) had 11 points. Senior Michael Welch (Stevensville-Lakeshore HS) added 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.

Cornerstone was led by Kyle Steigenga with 24 points while Cory Cox had 20.

The Golden Eagles outrebounded Calvin 39-30 and shot 53.7 percent from the field while holding Calvin to 33.9 percent field goal shooting.

Calvin returns to action on Friday night at 6 p.m. when it faces Aquinas College on the second and final day of the tournament. Host Hope defeated Aquinas 93-80 in Friday's second first round game.
