CALVIN KNIGHT SATURDAY SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT 29, 2016 (Part Two)

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 4, Olivet 1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team celebrated senior day with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Olivet Comets Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.

With the win, the Knights cement third place in the MIAA standings and gain the third seed for next week's MIAA Tournament.

The Knights must first face Hope next Monday at 3 p.m. at Zuidema Field in the regular season finale for both teams. Calvin will then travel to either Hope or Kalamazoo for an MIAA Tournament semifinal game on November 3.

Senior Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) celebrated senior day with a second half brace as the Knights scored three goals in the final 45 minutes to break away for the victory.

Calvin opened the scoring just 4:01 into the match as senior Brianna Russell (Plainwell, Mich./Delton-Kellogg HS) blew through the left side of the Olivet defense and smashed a shot past the goalkeeper for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Calvin threatened to widen its lead, hitting post and later the crossbar but could not convert. Olivet (8-9-1 overall, 6-8-1 MIAA) then leveled the score with a goal by Miranda Quick with just 2:19 left in the first half.

Calvin (11-7-1 overall, 10-4-1 MIAA) regained the lead in the 51st minute as Russell raced through the right wing and squared a pass the Veenstra slotted into the net.

In the 69th minute, senior Kailey Jo (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) came up with corner kick magic for the second straight game, bending in a corner that junior Emily Van Veldhuizen (Brookeville, Md./Washington Christian Academy) pounded through a gaggle of defenders and into the back of the net.

Calvin completed the scoring in the 88th minute as Veenstra slipped a shot from the right side of the box just inside the far post with junior Anica Pausma (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.

Calvin finished the game with a 26-6 shots at goal advantage. Sophomore Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS) came up with three saves in the win.

"It feels good to get a win for our seniors and it feels good to ensure our spot in the MIAA Tournament," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "I thought we had some good ball movement and created scoring chances as a result. We still need to work on our efficiency around the net but we are continuing to improve. We are receiving contributions from several different players an learning how to work together as a team. That's the goal for this program and I am pleased with the direction our program is taking."
