Men's Golf Third at MIAA Jamboree;
Vegter Named MIAA Defender of Week in Men's Soccer;
Mark DeJong Named MIAA Men's Cross Country Runner of Week

MEN'S GOLF

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team took third place at the fourth MIAA Jamboree on a windy Monday afternoon Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Knights shot a combined round of 305 strokes. The Knights sit in third place in the overall MIAA standings at 1194 strokes, one stroke behind Kalamazoo. Hope won the jamboree at 299 strokes and is in first place at 1167 strokes.
"Today was a tough day," said head coach Brian Bolt. "The conditions were tough today, I thought that we had some good scores. We have to now get ready for next week."
Sophomore Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) shot the lowest round for the Knights at 73, to take fifth place.
Freshman Joshua Song (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) finished tied for ninth place with a round of 75.
Junior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded a round of 78 to finish tied for 15th place.
Junior John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian) ended up tied for 21st place at 79 strokes.
Junior Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morning Star) shot a round of 83 to finish tied for 32nd place.
Playing unattached was sophomore Alec DeJonge (Niles, Mich./Niles) shot a round of 80, sophomore Mitchell Knoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded a round of 82 and junior Alex Wagner (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater) finished the day at 89 strokes.
The Knights conclude their fall schedule at the MIAA Final on Oct. 7-8 at Battle Creek Country Club, in Battle Creek, Michigan.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Mark DeJong claimed the Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week Award from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) on Monday for meets through Sept. 25.
A junior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, DeJong posted a strong finish for the 15th-ranked Calvin Knights, placing second at the MIAA Jamboree with a time of 25:29 on the 8K course at Pine River Country Club in Alma, Michigan, on Saturday.
DeJong was a part of a 1-2-3 Calvin finish on Saturday, with the Knights taking first place with 18 points.
This is the first time this season and the second time in his career claiming MIAA Runner of the Week honors in cross country.

MEN'S SOCCER

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- For the first time in his Calvin College career, sophomore Trent Vegter has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men's soccer.
A native of Hudsonville, Michigan, Vegter helped Calvin pick up a pair of victories in the MIAA, last week. A defender, Vegter assisted on a goal in Calvin's 4-0 victory over Kalamazoo on Wednesday afternoon.
On Saturday, tallied a goal and an assist in a 7-0 win over Olivet.
Vegter helped anchor a defense that has not allowed a goal in MIAA play.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels Alma at 4 p.m. to face the Scots.
