GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team entered Wednesday afternoon's match against the Kalamazoo Hornets on top of the MIAA standings, with hopes to extend its four-game win streak. The Knights, coming off a 3-0 road victory against rival Hope College, held a 5-1-0 record with a 2-0-0 conference mark, while the Hornets were 0-1-4 overall and 0-0-2 in the MIAA.
Calvin earned its fifth consecutive win, defeating Kalamazoo by a score of 4-0 to remain undefeated in the conference.
The Knights got on the board first in 27th minute when freshman Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian HS) put a shot on net and senior Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian HS) capitalized on the rebound.
Despite four Kalamazoo shots early in the first half, the Knights took control of the game following Hooker's goal.
In the 35th minute, Adams increased the Knights' lead to two goals, finding the back of the net off a pass by freshman Jacob Lyon (Holt, MI/Lansing Christian HS).
Less than three minutes later, freshman Hunter Olson (Canton, MI/Canton HS) made the score 3-0 in favor of the Knights, heading in the first goal of his Calvin career off a long pass by sophomore Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian HS).
The Knights went in to a halftime with a comfortable 3-0 lead over their visitors. At the break, Calvin had logged eight shots while Kalamazoo still had four.
Calvin would add one final goal in the 86th minute when sophomore Lucas Albrecht (Plymouth, MI/Plymouth Christian HS) scored his first of the season off a perfect cross by junior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon HS).
Final shots on goal were 16-5 in favor of the home team.
Knights' goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) posted his third straight shutout, making two saves in the victory.
"We feel very good about today's victory because we know that Kalamazoo is an excellent team and they will be difficult to beat when we face them again," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I thought we moved the ball well today and in doing that, created scoring chances. It was a good team effort. Now we have to prepare for a difficult opponent on Saturday."
Calvin is back in action on Saturday when they host Olivet College (1-7-1, 1-1-1 MIAA) at 2:30 p.m.
