Calvin Spring Sports Athletes Receive MIAA Player of Week Honors;
Corry Remy Strikes a Balance On and Off Women's Lacrosse Field

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the first time in her career, freshman Ellis Chalfant has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in women's lacrosse.
"I'm very proud that Ellis has been selected this week," said head coach Blake Boehm. "It's a testament to her hard work and dedication to continual improvement."
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, a graduate of Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School, Chalfant recorded three victories for Calvin in the net last week in leading Calvin to victories over Adrian, Hope and Olivet.
Chalfant recorded 22 saves on the week, including 10 saves at Hope in the 8-7 victory. She had a save percentage of .611 during the week.
Calvin finished the regular season with a 10-5 record and 7-1 in the MIAA. The Knights return to action on Thursday when they host Hope at 5 p.m. at Zuidema Field in the MIAA Tournament.

MORE WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Calvin will host rival Hope in an MIAA Tournament semifinal game on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Zuidema Field. Calvin will enter the game with a 10-5 overall record. The Knights finished in second place in the MIAA with a 7-1 record. One of the individuals who has played a key role in Calvin's success this year has been senior Corry Remy.

SOFTBALL

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the first time in her career, freshman Maddie DeGroot was named the Position Player of the Week by the MIAA.
"I am very proud of Maddie," said head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "She had a really nice week and helped us in some key moments last week. I am happy that she was recognized."
A native of Hudsonville, Michigan, DeGroot helped the Knights go 6-0 last week with wins over Cornerstone, Hope and Olivet. Helping the Knights end the season on a seven-game win streak.
She had three eventual game winning hits last week, with two against arch-rival Hope and one at Olivet.
DeGroot had a batting average of .458 last week, with 11 hits and six runs. She hit her fifth homerun of the season at Olivet on Saturday. DeGroot had three hits against Cornerstone in game two and Olivet in game one.
She ended the year with a 14-game hit streak.

Calvin finished tied for fourth in the final MIAA standings with Saint Mary's. Due to a tiebreaker advantage, Saint Mary's claimed the fourth and final spot for the MIAA Tournament.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Two members of the Calvin men's outdoor track and field team have received weekly honors from the MIAA. Senior Lucas Wolters has named the MIAA's Field Athlete while junior Zach Nowicki has been named the MIAA's Runner of the week.

Wolters is receiving MIAA Field Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in outdoor track and field. He received the same honor once during the recently completed indoor campaign.

A native of Vincennes, Indiana, Wolters vaulted a career-best 15-11 in the pole vault last Saturday at the Calvin Tune-Up Invitational. A graduate of South Knox High School, Wolters currently sits 15th on the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field performance list.

Nowicki is received MIAA Runner of the Week honors for the second time this spring. A native of Comstock Park and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Nowicki clocked in with a career-best time of 9:08.20 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase Friday night at the Hilllsdale Gina Relays. The time was a personal-best by nearly 17 seconds and vaulted him into 10th place on the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field performance list.

Nowicki and Wolters and the rest of their Calvin track and field teammates will compete at the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Thursday and Friday at Olivet College.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

For the second time in her collegiate career, Calvin senior McKenzie Diemer has been named MIAA Runner of the Week in women's outdoor track and field.

A native of Caledonia and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School, Diemer clocked a season-best time of 10:45.94 in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase last Friday night at the Hilllsdale Gina Relays.

The time places Diemer fifth on the current NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field performance list.

Diemer and the rest of her Calvin track and field teammates will compete at the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Thursday and Friday at Olivet College.

MEN'S TENNIS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the second time in his career, senior Matt Buesing was named the MIAA Tennis Player of the Week. This is the first time this season that he has been honored.
"I am so happy for him to be honored," said head coach John Ross. "He has been a great leader and a great person for our program the past four years and I am really happy he is being honored."
A native of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Buesing helped lead Calvin go 2-0 last week and secure a spot in the MIAA Tournament with victories over Alma and Trine.
Buesing started the week with a victory at No. 1 singles over Alma's Jared Guy, 6-3, 6-0. He then topped Trine's Judson Quinn at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, Buesing and sophomore David Brown went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, beating Alma 8-6 and Trine 8-6.
Buesing and the Knights return to action on Thursday when they travel to Kalamazoo to face the Hornets in the MIAA Tournament.
