CALVIN KNIGHT WEEKEND SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 17, 2016 (Part Two)

MEN'S GOLF

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team competed at the Weist Foundation Classic in Decatur, Illinois and the Furniture City Classic in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Knights finished the two-day Weist Foundation Classic in seventh place at 604 strokes. Calvin took fourth place at the Furniture City Classic at 316 strokes.
Sophomore Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) finished tied for third at the Weist Foundation Classic. VanScoyk shot 72 both days for a two-day total of 144.
Tied for 20th was freshman Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who after shooting a round of 78 on Friday, shot a 72 on Saturday.
Sophomore John Van Noord (Troy/Oakland Christian HS) and sophomore Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indoesia/Morningstar Academy) finished tied for 51st place at 155 for the weekend.
Senior Jason Ziegler (Mount Gilead, Oh./Gilead Christian HS) improved a stroke on Saturday to finish with 82 strokes and a two-day total of 165, tied for 82nd place.
John A. Logan College finished in first place at 585 strokes.

Calvin also sent a second squad of golfers to compete at the Furniture City Classic hosted by Davenport University Saturday at the Stonewater Country Club.

Calvin took fourth with a team score of 316 strokes with Davenport taking first with a score of 283.

Freshman Alec DeJonge (Niles/Niles HS) was Calvin's top individual with a round of 77 while senior Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was close behind with a 78. Sophomore Sean Behrens (Arlington Heights, Il./Rolling Meadows HS) had a round of 80 followed by freshman Mitchell Knoor (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 81 and sophomore Alex Wagner (Pentwater/Pentwater HS) with an 83.

Calvin is back in action on Tuesday, hosting its own Knight Invitational at the Pilgrim's Run Golf Course.

WOMEN'S GOLF

AUGATUCK, Mich. - The Calvin women's golf team fell at the DAP Cup to Hope on Saturday, 0-5-1. The match was played at the Ravines.
Senior Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) fell to Megan Klintworth, 5 & 4. Junior Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) was topped by Emily Daenzer, 5 & 4.
Senior Shara Reynolds was defeated by Dominique Molinaro, 2 & 1. Senior Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) was beat by Morgan Leep, who was 2 up. Sophomore Emilee McCusker (Hayward, Wisc./Hayward HS) fell to Megan Wierenga, who was 1 up. Freshman Grace Bolt (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Elena Moore played to draw.
Senior Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) did not finish her match with Britni Gielow.

MEN'S TENNIS
Adrian 6, Calvin 3

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team fell short to the Adrian Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, 6-3. The loss moves Calvin to 8-4 on the year and 2-2 in the MIAA.
"Today was a tough match," said head coach John Ross. "Adrian is a good team and they proved that today. We need to bounce back on Monday at Bethel."
Senior Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, Il./Fremnd HS) and sophomore David Brown (Lake Zurich, Il./Lake Zurich HS) recorded the first point of the day for Calvin at No. 2 doubles. The duo defeated Jeff Sophiea and Jon Rhind, 8-5.
At No. 4 singles, junior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) defeated Jeff Sophiea, 6-1, 2-6, 4-4, by default.
Junior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) was victorious at No. 6 singles, downing Jon Rhind, 6-3, 6-3.
The Knights look to bounce back on Monday when they travel to Indiana to face Bethel.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team dug down on a warm sunny Saturday afternoon to claim a 7-2 conference victory over Saint Mary's at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

The Knights are now 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA.

Calvin set the tone by winning all three doubles flights to take an early 3-0 lead. Juniors Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) and Claire Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles while sophomores Lark Foote (Okemos/Home School) and Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian HS) picked up an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Knights then received a huge momentum boost at No. 2 doubles as the tandem of sophomores Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) pulled out a 9-8 win including a 7-3 triumph in the tiebreaker.

"This was a big match for us," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Our big focus was to find a way to get two out of the three doubles matches. We had not won two doubles matches against Saint Mary's in several years so to win all three today was huge."

In singles action, Benzel cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 win over Andrea Fetters at No. 1 singles to provide the clinching fifth point for the Knights after Seazzu had won 6-0, 6-1 over Margaret Faller at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Kari Kroeze (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 6 singles while Bouma pulled out a 4-6, 6-0, 10-2 win at No. 3 singles.

"Saint Mary's came out strong in singles but we responded by pulling out some tough singles victories," said Van Haitsma. "This was a really solid win for our team."

Calvin will travel to Spring Arbor University next Wednesday for a non-conference match slated to start at 4 p.m.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin men's track and field team competed on Saturday at the Don Kleinow Invitational on the campus of Siena Heights University.

Sophomore Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) highlighted the afternoon by winning the 400 meter dash with a season-best time of 47.94 that ranks sixth on the current NCAA III performance list.

Calvin's distance contingent had a strond day. Junior Zach Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) who captured the steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:24.61 that places him 15th on the current NCAA III performance list.

In the 5,000 meters, Calvin took the top six spots as senior Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, Mn./STillwater Area HS) was first (15:13.98), sophomore Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) second (15:15.09, sophomore Mark DeJong third (15:40.69), senior Bret Habura (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville HS) fourth (15:59.25), junior Nathan Van Haitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) fiftth (16:03.96), and junior Andrew Rylaardsam (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) sixth (16:08.73).

In the 10,000 meters, Calvin took four of the top seven spots led by senior Robert Hohlman (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) who won the race in a time of 33:15.13. Sophomore Nathan Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was fifth (33:57.96), senior Landon Potts (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) sixth (34:06.36) and junior Matthew Plantinga (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian S) seventh (34:16.89).

In the 110 meter hurdles, sophomore Chase Rohrer (Ludington/Ludington HS) was seventh (15.58). Sophomore Jeiel Burrell (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second in the high jump (6-4) while freshman Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) was fifth in the long jump (20-9 1/4), and freshman Isaac Chen (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) seventh (20-3). In the hammer throw, senior David Dadzie (Accra, Ghana/Ghana International School) was seventh with a throw of 154-11.

Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of senior Cole Evans (Chicago, Il./Walther Lutheran HS), senior Joel Brouwer (Elmhurst, Il./Timothy Christian HS), junior Aaron Tucker (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian School) and Barents took fourth in a time of 44.83.

Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of junior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, Il./Mahomet-Seymour HS), senior Jeff Meitler (New Berlin, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS), senior Matt Oram (Toledo, Oh./Toledo Christian HS) and sophomore Hendrik Vermeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School) was fifth in a tie of 3:30.17.

Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

In the 10,000 meters, the Knights took the top three spots led by junior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Preparatory HS) who took first place in a time of 37:08.94. Sophomore Kate McLain (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) was second (38:44.95) and freshman Maria Kuiper (Zeeland/Holland Christian HS) third (39:05.15).

In the 5,000 meter run, freshman Lindsey Fox (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth (19:20.43).

In the 1,500 meters, freshman Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) took second with a career-best time of 4:45.94. Senior McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South C?hristian HS) was sixth in a time of 4:55.13.

Senior Maria Steblay (Eden Prairie, Mn./Eden Prairie HS) was eighth in the 200 meters (26.71). Sophomore Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Skyline HS) was third in the 400 meters (1:00.74) while sophomore Caroline Boss (Charlevoix/Charlevoix HS) was eighth in the 800 meters (2:25.56).

In the 100 meter hurdles, sophomore Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) was third (15.20) and Steblay fifth (15.36). Dyksen also took second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:06.36) while senior Kally Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was fourth (1:06.87).

Junior Autumn Vonk (Zeeland/Zeeland West HS) took fourth in the steeplechase with a career-best time of 12:01.08 while senior Lora Huizingh (Byron Center/South Christian HS) was fifth (12:10.20).

Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of Dyksen, VanderMeulen, freshman Selvi Bunce (Savage, Mn./Savage HS) and Steblay took third in a time of 49.94 while its 4x400 meter relay team of Boss, Bunce, VandeMeulen and Verkaik took second in a time of 4:07.67.

Freshman Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) and sophomore Sarah Cassel (Wheaton/Wheaton North HS) tied for seventh in the high jump at 5-1.

The Knights placed three individuals in the top six of the triple jump as senior Ayooluwa Ayoola was third (35-11 1/4), junior Carissa Weiss (Mt. Prosepect, Il./Mt. Prospect HS) fifth (35-7 3/4) and freshman Madison Orth (Soldotna, Alk./Cook Inlet Academy) sixth (35-3).

Sophomore Bethany Love (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) placed fourth in the shot put (41-11 1/2). In the discus throw, junior Michaela Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was was seventh (126-8) and senior Stacie Mead (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) eighth (124-7).

Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University.
