GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team got back to winning ways on Thursday afternoon. The Knights recorded two wins over the Albion Britons. The Knights started the day with a 3-0 victory and closed out the day beating the Britons, 8-7.
"I am proud of the guys," said Calvin head coach John Rypel. "I thought we played well today, our pitchers performed well today and we had some timely hits. Our guys didn't panic when we fell behind and they did what they had to do to win.
Calvin struck first in the first inning. After reaching on a double when the Albion outfielder lost the ball in the sun, senior Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Colton Wolfe.
Sophomore Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS) would score in the second inning with a bases loaded walk.
In the fifth inning, Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS) singled to score Jordan VanderWall from second base.
The Knights had three hits in game one, with Jordan VanderWall, Colton Wolfe and Ryan Stewart all had a hit.
Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) had an excellent outing on the mound on Thursday. Keane threw the complete game and had three strikeouts.
Freshman Jonathan Keane got the scoring started in the second game in the second inning. Keane flied out to the outfield to score sophomore Nick Steiginga (Mahwah, NJ/Eastern Christian HS).
In the third inning, freshman Steven Seager (Plantation, FL/Plantation HS) sent the ball flying over the left-field fence to give Calvin a 2-0 lead.
The Britons would cut the lead in half before the Knights would score three more runs in the fourth inning. Nick Steiginga scored on a throwing error and Jonathan Keane blasted the ball over the left-field wall, scoring junior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg/Edwardsburg HS).
The Britons would not go away and would score five-straight runs to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Colton Wolfe gave the Knights the lead back with the swing of the bat, in the seventh inning. Wolfe joined the homerun party with a blast over the fence, scoring Steven Seager. Nick Steiginga scored on a sacrifice fly from Mike Kempton.
Albion would score a run in the ninth inning to cut the lead, but freshman Spencer Yahrmarkt (Sanford/Meridian HS) got Turnbull to ground to first with runners on second and third base.
Jordan VanderWall, Mike Kempton and sophomore Nate DeZwaan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) all had two hits in game two.
Ryan Stewart started the game going 4.1 innings, with two strikeouts. Junior Sawyer Howard (Atlanta, Il./Olympia HS) would also record two strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Freshman Logan Walker (Imlay City/Lapeer East HS) and Spencer Yahrmarkt closed out the ninth inning for the Knights.
The Knights and Britons return to action on Saturday in Albion to complete the series.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Olivet 21, Calvin 11
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A five-goal spurt in a four-minute span proved to be too much for the Calvin men's lacrosse team to overcome as the Knights were defeated by Olivet 21-11 on Wednesday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
Calvin trailed just 5-3 after one quarter of play but but Olivet whipped in five goals in the opening four minutes of the second quarter to take a 10-3 lead and never look back.
Calvin (5-6 overall, 0-2 MIAA) trailed 15-5 at halftime and then traded goals with Olivet in the second half as the Comets outscored Calvin 4-2 in the third quarter with the Knights outscoring Calvin 4-2 in the fourth.
Junior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) had three goals and four ground balls. Junior Chris Griffin (Hartland/Hartland HS) tallied three goals and an assist.
Sophomore Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) also had three goals and an assist to go with three ground balls.
Freshman Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored a goal on an impressive end-to-end rush while scooping up six ground balls.
Sophomore Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS) tallied a goal and a team-high seven assists. Sophomore Derek VanderBrug (Woburn, Mass./Whitinsville HS) and freshman Jonathan Miller (Boise, ID/Ambrose School) had five goals balls apiece. Miller also saw 15 minutes in goal and collected three saves.
Sophomore Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS), sophomore Austin Roden (Delaware, Oh./Delaware Christian HS) and freshman Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) all had one assist apiece.
Freshman Tristan Parece (Kelowna, BC/Kelowna Secondary School) had 14 saves in 45 minutes in goal for the Knights.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Trine for a 1 p.m. contest.
