MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Concordia (Mich.) 0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team improved to 8-2 on the year with a 9-0 victory over Concordia on Monday afternoon.
"Today was a good warm-up for Hope," said head coach John Ross. "It was good to get the guys on the court today and play some tennis."
Senior Matt Buesing and sophomore David Brown recorded an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles and sophomore Matt VanWinkle and junior Taylor Asfour won at No. 1 doubles, 8-1.
Concordia did not have enough players to field competition at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Matt Buesing defeated Andrew Koerkel, 6-0, 6-0.
Matt VanWinkle beat Joel Werner at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Jason Wolters swept Tyler Tweedale at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior Anthony Vroon blanked Lukas Mueller at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Taylor Asfour was victorious over Ty Smith at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday as they host Hope College.

SOFTBALL
Alma 3, Calvin 2

ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin softball team fell to the No. 12 Scots on Monday afternoon at Alma. The Knights fell short in game one, 3-2. Calvin would then be topped in game two, 2-0. The Knights are now 12-8 on the year and 2-2 in MIAA play.
"We fought hard today," said Calvin head coach Tim Syrek. "These were not the results we were hoping for coming into today. Alma is a good team and we were right there with them. There are some things we have to work on and we need to start preparing for Trine on Wednesday."
The Scots struck first on Monday scoring a run in the first and third innings.
Calvin would get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when freshman Anna Gernant on a passed ball.
Senior Lydia Gildea would get freshman Rachel Borden across the plate on an error.
Alma would add another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take back the lead, 3-2.
Anna Gernant had a solid outing in the circle on Monday, striking out seven.
Rachel Borden led the Knights with two hits in game one.
The Knights and Scots went five scoreless innings in game two before Alma put a run on the board in the sixth and seventh inning. That is all Alma would need with the Scots shutting out Calvin for the first time this season.
Calvin had four hits in game two, freshman Maddie DeGroot, Lydia Gildea, senior Ashley Riemersma and freshman Kristen Newman all recorded a hit.
Junior Paige Groom held Alma five hits on Monday, she notched seven strikeouts in the loss.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday when they resume MIAA at Home against Trine.

ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at league-leading Adrian on Monday, falling by scores of 5-2 and 14-4.

In game one, Calvin (7-14 overall, 3-7 MIAA) outhit Adrian 7-6 but the host Bulldogs (13-7 overall, 8-2 MIAA) capitalized on seven Calvin walks. Adrian scored two runs in the bottom of the first, one in the third and two more in the fifth to give starter Tommy Parsons (5-1) all the run support he would need.

Calvin picked up a run in the fifth on an RBI double by freshman Steven Dogger (Holland/Holland Calvary HS) that plated junior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg/Edwardsburg HS) who had earlier singled. The run by Calvin snapped a scoreless streak of 21.3 innings tossed by Parsons stretched out over the last three games.

Calvin scored another run in the sixth as junior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS) doubled , advanced to third on a wild pitch and then came home on a groundout by junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS).

Freshman Clay Franciso (Delton/Thornapple-Kellogg HS) took the loss for Calvin as he went the first 4.0 innings. Junior Patrick Avila (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) and freshman Luke Walker (Imlay City/Lapeer East HS) also saw time in relief.

Kempton and freshman Steven Seager (Plantation, FL/Plantation HS) had two hits apiece in the loss.

In game two, Adrian broke loose for 16 hits and scored six runs in the third and six more in the seventh to pull away for the win.

Calvin had 10 hits in defeat led by senior Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) who went 3-for-5 with a double. Kempton and freshman Jonathon Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) had two hits apiece. Wolfe also reached base three times, twice by base on balls and once on a base hit while driving in one run.

Freshman Spencer Yahrmarkt (Sanford/Meridian HS) took the loss for Calvin. Freshman Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Sawyer Howard (Atlanta, Il./Olympia HS) and freshman Tyler Meyer (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also saw time in relief.

The two teams will play again on Tuesday at Calvin in a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.

MEN'S GOLF

PORTAGE, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team took fourth place in a field of 13 teams with a team score of 319 strokes at the Steven Tyler Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by Kalamazoo College Monday afternoon at the Moors Golf Club.

Hope took first place with a team score of 308 followed by Adrian in second at 309 and Trine third at 313.

Sophomore John Van Noord (Troy/Oakland Christian HS) led Calvin with a round of 77 to tie for fifth place individually. Freshman Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next for Calvin with a round of 79 that was good for 13th place individually.

Sophomore Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morningstar Academy) had a round of 80 while sophomore Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) carded a round of 83. Senior Jason Zeigler (Gilead, Oh./Mount Gilead HS) round out Calvin's finishers with a round of 85.

Winston Munch and Ben Kramer of Hope shared medalist honors with rounds of 74.

Calvin is back in action on Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Weist Invitational in Decatur, Illinois.
