Men's Lacrosse Falls to Benedictine 15-9;
Tennis Teams Claim Non-Conference Wins
MEN'S LACROSSE
Benedictine 15, Calvin 9
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Benedictine University handed Calvin a 15-9 defeat in a hard-fought non-conference game at Calvin's Zuidema Field Wednesday afternoon.
Calvin (4-4) trailed Benedictine 5-0 after one quarter of play but then rallied behind a solid attack.
Freshman Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills/Brother Rice HS) put Calvin on the board two minutes into the second quarter off a feed from sophomore Michael Winkler (La Quinta, CA/Palm Desert HS). Junior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS) drew Calvin to within 6-2 on a nice give-and-go with sophomore teammate Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS).
Junior Chris Griffin (Hartland/Hartland HS) later added back-to-back goals just 23 seconds apart to pull the Knights to within 7-4. Benedictine (7-2) closed the second quarter with three unanswered goals to lead 10-4 at halftime.
Calvin refused to fold in the second half however as Schaefer scored unassisted and freshman Seth Galyon (St. Anthony, MN/Concordia Academy) scored on an extra-man opportunity making the score 12-6
Benedictine stretched its lead back out to 15-7 before Schaefer was able to score on an assist from junior Jake Horstman (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and Griffin was able to score on a feed from Schaefer to provide the final margin of victory.
Schaefer and Griffin both had three goals in the loss with Schaefer collecting two assists and Griffin one. Foster, Galyon and sophomore Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) all had single goals.
Freshman Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a team-high seven ground balls. Freshman Hunter Naggs (Cedarburg, Wisc./Cedarburg HS) won nine faceoffs. Freshman goalie Tristan Parace was strong in goal, recording 15 saves.
Benedictine outshot Calvin 48-30 in the contest but just 23-18 in the second half.
"I'm super proud of our guys and the fight that we gave," said Calvin men's lacrosse coach Luke Griemsman. "Our (roster) numbers are nowhere near where their (roster) numbers are at right now but when it was 10 on 10 out there we stuck with them and that's something to be proud of."
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Carroll College (Wisc.) for a game slated to start at noon.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Aquinas 2
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team topped Aquinas on Wednesday afternoon, 7-2. The Knights improve to 7-3 on the year, while Aquinas falls to 4-8.
"I am so proud of the team," said Calvin head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "We showed a lot of toughness today, the most we might have showed all season. Aquinas is a really good team and we knew that today was going to be very tough. I am pleased with how we are playing heading into MIAA play."
The Saints would get on the scoreboard first with a victory at No. 1 doubles. The team of senior Lea Jansen and freshman Martina Devetak defeated junior Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas HS) and junior Claire Spoelhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS), 8-0.
Calvin would tie the match at one with a win at No. 3 doubles. Junior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian HS) and sophomore Lark Foote (Okemos/Okemos HS) were victorious over junior Brittany Mayer and junior Kali Green, 8-1.
Calvin's sophomore duo of Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) came from behind to win at No. 3 doubles. After trailing 1-4 and 5-6 the duo rallied to defeat senior MJ Bothma and senior Anna Musiyenko, 8-6.
Aquinas' Lea Jansen would tie the match at two with a 6-3, 6-1, victory over Ellie Benzel at No. 1 singles. That would be the last point that the Saints would score in the match.
Claire Spoelhof gave the Knights the lead with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Martina Devetak at No. 2 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Micaela Seazzu defeated MJ Bothma, 6-3, 6-4.
Calvin's Liz Turner had match point on junior Kasey Jacobs when the match was halted and brought inside due to lightning. Turner would seal the deal and win the match at No. 6 singles to clinch the match for Calvin, 6-4, 6-1.
Sophomore Kari Kroeze (Holland/Holland Christian HS) defeated Brittany Mayer of Aquinas at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-6.
The final match at No. 4 singles came down to the wire and required a third-set tiebreaker. Freshman Alyssa Bowman (Rockford/Rockford HS) took the first set over Anna Musiyenko of Aquinas, 6-1. Musiyenko would fight back and take the second set, 6-3. Bowman would go on to win the tiebreaker, 11-9.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they start MIAA action versus the Alma Scots.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 5, Spring Arbor 4
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team improved to 5-2 in 2016 with a win at Spring Arbor on Wednesday. The Knights defeated the Cougars, 5-4.
"Today was a very nice road win," said Calvin head coach John Ross. "We had some very clutch individual wins today. We knew that Spring Arbor was going to be really tough and they were."
The Knights notched two victories in doubles to take an early lead on the road. Senior Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremd HS) and sophomore David Brown (Lake Zurich, IL/Lake Zurich HS) defeated Vincent McShane and Tony Mayotte at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Jason Wolters and freshman Andrew Airgood (Sturgis/Sturgis HS) defeated Thomas Hall and Jacob Byrd, 8-6.
David Brown gave Calvin a 3-1 lead with a victory over Jacob Byrd at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
The Cougars would tie the match at three with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
Junior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) would reclaim the lead for Calvin at No. 4 singles, defeating Josh Scott, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Jason Wolters (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) would clinch the match with a victory at No. 6 singles, downing Sam Head, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they start MIAA play, hosting Albion.
