Calvin Spring Sports Teams Open Spring Break Competition
SOFTBALL
College of New Jersey 10, Calvin 9
Anderson 7, Calvin 5
CLERMONT, Fla. - The Calvin softball team started the 2016 season falling to The College of New Jersey and Anderson on Saturday evening. The Knights started the day falling to TCNJ in eight innings, 10-9. Calvin ended the day falling to Anderson, 7-5.
"We played really tough today," said head coach Tim Syrek. "We played two really good teams today and we were close in both games. We will learn from today and use this to get better this season."
TCNJ took an early lead on Saturday with one run in the first inning and three in the fifth inning.
The Knights would fight back tallying five runs in the sixth inning.
Junior Caitlin Bell got the Knights on the scoreboard with a double with the bases loaded, sending home freshman Kristen Newman and sophomore Kimiko Hinatsu.
Freshman Maddie DeGroot would then clear the bases with a triple, sending in freshman Kristen Newman and Bell. DeGroot would score off of a passed ball.
TCNJ would take the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning at 6-5.
The Knights would not go away and would score three runs in the seventh to extend the game.
Ashley Riemersma doubled in senior Lydia Gildea and freshman Anna Gernant. Bell hit in Riemersma.
TCNJ would tie the game at eight to force an eighth inning.
Sophomore Jessica Brasser was able to get Maddie DeGroot home in the eighth inning before TCNJ scored two runs to win.
Anna Gernant pitched 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts and two walks.
Maddie DeGroot and Ashley Riemersma both recorded two hits in the loss.
Anderson jumped out to an early lead in game two, the Ravens hit a grand slam in the first inning and added a run in the third inning to take a 5-0 run.
Lydia Gildea started the Calvin comeback, batting in freshman Rachel Borden.
The Ravens added in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead.
Calvin wouldn't go away quietly, scoring two in the bottom of the fifth inning with Jessica Brasser scoring Caitlin Bell and Kimiko Hinatsu to cut the lead to 7-3.
Freshman Casey Lawler made a splash in the lineup with a homerun in her first at bat at Calvin College, also scoring freshman Maggie Kaercher to make it 7-5.
Junior Paige Groom threw five innings, striking out three batters. Freshman Makela Chapman pitched two innings and strikeout one on Saturday.
The Knights return to the diamond on Monday when they will face Fitchburg State and Westfield State.
BASEBALL
Capital 7, Calvin 4
WESTFIELD, Ind. - Calvin dropped a 7-4 non-conference decision at Capital University Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 0-4 on the year.
Capital (7-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and limited Calvin to just one hit through the first five innings.
The Knights plated across a pair of runs in the sixth as junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) drove in one run with a double and freshman Steven Seager (Plantation, FL/Plantation HS) drove in another with a ground-out.
Capital added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Calvin pushed across its third run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by junior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS). In the ninth, sophomore Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS) delivered an RBI triple that brought home sophomore Nate DeZwaan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) but the Knights would not score again.
Junior Sawyer Howard (Atlanta, IL/Olympia HS) took the loss for Calvin in his debut for the Knights. Shane Wellman was the winner for Capital, striking out 12 batters in five innings of work as four Capital pitchers combined to strike out 19 Knights on the day.
Senior outfielder Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) led Calvin at the plate with a pair of hits.
Calvin returns to action on Monday when it faces Utica College in a doubleheader slated to start at 10 a.m. in Auburndale, Florida.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Capital 18, Calvin 11
BEXLEY, Oh. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team picked up its first loss of the season at Capital on Saturday. The Crusaders topped the Knights, 18-11. Calvin moves to 2-1 on the year and Capital improves to 4-0 in 2016.
"Today was a tough game," said head coach Blake Boehm. Capital is a well-coached team with excellent athletes. We lost track of our objectives and focus in the last 15 minutes of the game and started making poor decisions. We can learn a lot from this game. We'll fix our mistakes and get to work prepping for Berry."
Junior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central HS) led the Knights with five goals on Saturday and also recorded an assist in the loss.
Sophomore Amanda Davio (Okemos/Okemos HS) scored four goals against the Crusaders.
Freshman Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) notched nine saves on the day.
The Knights were outshot 35-22 by Capital.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday as the Knights will travel to Georgia to face Berry.
MEN'S LACROSSE
DePauw 20, Calvin 7
The Calvin men's lacrosse team dropped a 20-7 decision to visiting DePauw Saturday afternoon at Eagle Stadium on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School. The Knights are now 2-2 on the season.
Calvin struggled to stay out of the penalty box throughout the game as the Knights were tagged for 10 penalties which led to a total of 17 penalty minutes. DePauw (3-1) took advantage, scoring seven goals in extra-man opportunities.
DePauw led 5-0 after one quarter of play and led at halftime 11-3. Calvin received one first half goal from freshman Seth Galyon (St. Anthony, Mn./Concordia Academy) and two from freshman Jonathon Miller (Boise, Id./Ambrose School).
DePauw outscored Calvin 3-1 in the third quarter with sophomore Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) scoring the lone goal for the Knights in the quarter.
Calvin picked up a bit of momentum in the fourth quarter as Miller scored just 15 seconds and added another minutes later. DePauw used a four-goal flurry to seal the win with Ray collecting a goal for Calvin with just 1:12 remaining.
DePauw outshot Calvin 67-32. Freshman goalie Tristan Parece (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary School) had a busy afternoon, collecting 22 saves.
Miller had four goals and two assists while Ray had two goals and Galyon one goal. Junior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) had one assist. Sophomore Ethan Brown (Falmouth, Me./Falmouth HS) scooped up seven ground balls while freshman Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had six. Sophomore Austin Roden (Delaware, Oh./Delaware Christian HS) had Calvin's greatest success in faceoff circle, winning 8 of 21 faceoffs.
Calvin will now travel south for its spring break trip. The Knights will be at Oglethorpe University (Ga.) Tuesday night and at Piedmont College (Ga.) on Friday afternoon.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
BIRMINGHAM, Al. - Calvin opened its outdoor track and field campaign on Friday and Saturday at the Southern Invitational hosted by Birmingham Southern.
On the men's side, junior Nathan Marcus (Holland/Holland Christian took first in the pole vault (13-11 1/4) while sophomore Jacob Stout (Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was third (13-5 1/4) and senior Collin Martin (Leslie/Leslie) fourth (11-11 3/4).
Senior Eric Jipping (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) won the shot put (48-4 1/2) while junior Jeiel Burrell (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third in the high jump (6-0 3/4).
Freshman Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian Academy) was seventh in the triple jump (41-8 3/4).
Senior David Dadzie (Accra, Ghana/Ghana International School) was fourth in the hammer throw (143-3), freshman Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) sixth (136-5) and Jipping eighth (127-0).
In the steeplechase, junior Zach Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) took second (9:31.88) while senior Bret Habura (Washingtonville, NY/) was fourth (9:55.88), sophomore Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) fifth (10:06.98) and sophomore Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) eighth (10:23.37).
Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore Chase Rohrer (Ludington/Ludington HS), junior Aaron Tucker (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian), senior Cole Evans (Chicago, Il./Walther Lutheran HS) and senior Joel Brouwer (Elmhurst, Il./Timothy Christian HS) took fourth in a time of 44.65.
Freshman James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) took sixth with a time of 1:56.78.
Rohrer then took fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.37.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
