Hockey Team Advances to National Semifinals; Women's Tennis Falls to Davenport

HOCKEY
Calvin 5, Bryn Athyn 4

BYRON CENTER, Mich. - The Calvin hockey team advanced to the ACHA Division III Tournament semifinals with a 5-4 win over Bryn Athyn Thursday night at Southside Ice Arena.

Calvin will face local rival Aquinas College Friday night at 8 p.m. at Southside Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Calvin exploded for four goals in the second period with Jordan Duncan scoring on a breakaway and Cameron Bell doing the same shortly while the Knights were shorthanded. David Zwiers also scored late in the second period to put Calvin in seeming control.

Calvin scored early in the fifth period to take a 5-0 advantage but Bryn Athyn (Pa.) refused to fold, ripping off a three-goal flurry in a span of just over four minutes to close the gap to 5-3.

Bryn Athyn then scored with 7:31 remaining to make it a one-goal game at 5-4, setting up a tense final seven-and-a-half minutes.

Calvin's defense was up to the task however, keeping Bryn Athyn from scoring again to seal the win.

Calvin will be making its fourth appearance in the national semifinals Friday evening. Oakland University and Central Michigan will play in the other semifinal.
