By Gina de Haan
The Calvin men's swimming and diving team continued to roll on the third day of the 2016 MIAA Championships at the Venema Aquatic Center. The Knights scored 307 points on Friday for a three-day total of 659.5. Calvin was victorious in five of the six events. The Knights are currently 186 points ahead of Albion who sits in second place with 473.5 points.
To start the evening, the 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Ben Holstege (Keswick, VA/Covenant HS), senior Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, Oh./Mount Vernon HS), senior Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) and freshman Jared Britton (Fall Church, VA./George Mason HS) earned the first Calvin victory of the night, taking first place with a MIAA record, Calvin record and NCAA III B' cut time of 1:30.06. The time eclipses the previous MIAA record time of 1:30.51 set by Kalamazoo in 2009.
Calvin senior Caleb Meindertsma (Annandale, Va./Trinity Christian HS) earned the Knights' second victory of the evening, winning the men's 400 IM with a B cut time of 4:02.47. Sophomore Tanner Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) took third in the race with a time of 4:08.02. The win marked Meindertsma's second crown in the event in the last three years with Vincent the league champion in 2015.
In the men's 100 fly finals, Calvin took second, third and fifth. Jared Britton recorded an NCAA III B' cut time of 49.48, just .14 seconds over the winning time swam by Albion's Nate Kozycki. Calvin's Brett Stoughton finished with a time of 49.60 and Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) recorded a time of 51.91. The times by Britton and Stoughton were both NCAA III B' cut times and marked the first time that either swimmer had eclipsed the 50 second mark in the event.
Touching the wall first in the men's 200-yard freestyle finals was Calvin senior Brandon Muma who swam an NCAA III B' cut time of 1:39.94 after clocking a time of 1:39.50 in the morning prelims. Calvin freshman Andrew Kasper (Batavia, Il./Marmion Academy) placed third with a time of 1:14.00, while senior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) finished with times of 1:42.64 (5th) and 1:44.80 (8th), respectively.
The Knights also took first place in the men's 100-yard breaststroke as Johnson Cochran took home the win for the third straight year in the event, this time clocking in with an NCAA III B' cut effort of 55.20. Sophomore Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) earned a third place finish for the Knights with a time of 57.44, while junior Marshall Campbell (Gladstone, Mo./Home School) came in fourth place with a time of 59.90. Calvin freshman Jacob Lensing (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) finished seventh overall with a time of 1:00.82.
The Calvin men would end the night with another first place finish, this time earned by sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia/Ionia HS) who swam an NCAA III B' cut time of 50.46 in the men's 100-yard backstroke. Ben Holstege placed second for the Knights, recording an NCAA III B' cut time of 50.83.
Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos cited his team's exceptional performances as well as those being turned by the rest of the league. "The times this week have been incredible across the board," said Gelderloos. "I don't think the league has ever had three individuals swim under 50 seconds in the 100 fly on the same night. That was an amazing race to watch and it was exciting to see two of our guys be a part of it. We had some great performances. Brandon Muma has just come full circle with his development as a person and swimmer and it showed tonight. I'm so proud of him. Skyler Fish dug down and found something extra to win the 100 back and what more can I say about Johnson Cochran. The guy came in when our program was not as talented as we are at this point and stayed the course. Caleb Meindertsma came in the same way and has been a huge building block with our success."
The Knights return to the pool Saturday for the fourth and final day of competition and the MIAA Championships.

"I was very proud of how the women bounced back this evening," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "Things did not go our way this morning. I told them we had to use some of and have a really special evening and we did just that. I think we had a 17 point turnaround between the 100 fly and the 200 freestyle in our favor. It came from girls doing it the right way, swimming for each other and swimming for Calvin College."
The Knights started the evening taking fourth place in the 200 medley relay. The team of freshman Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan), sophomore Klara Oh (Kent, Wash.), freshman Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) and sophomore Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) finished with a time of 1:44.03.

VanHarn notched a NCAA "B" cut time of 1:51.23 in the victory, the time is the second-fastest time in school history.
