MEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 28, Defiance 1
PONTIAC, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team started the 2016 season in dominating fashion. The Knights downed Defiance 28-1. The moves Calvin to 1-0 on the year and sends the Yellow Jackets to 0-1 in 2016. The 28 goals is the most in Calvin history and the victory is the largest margin of victory in school history.
"I was very proud of our guys winning with character," said head coach Luke Griemsman. "I am really happy with how we played today. It was nice to see all the hard work that the guys put in during the offseason pay off."
Sophomore Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) led the Knights on Friday with a game-high 10 goals. Ray also notched an assist in the win.
Junior Chris Griffin (Hartland/Hartland HS) recorded seven goals and three assists on Friday.
Freshman Seth Galyon (St. Anthony, MN/Concordia Academy) joined the scoring party with four goals and seven assists.
Freshman Jonathan Miller (Boise, ID/Ambrose School) scored two goals and finished with an assist.
Freshman Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS), sophomore Tyson Butler (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge HS), freshman Hunter Naggs (Cedarburg, Wisc./Cedarburg) and sophomore Michael Winkler (La Quinta, CA/Palm Desert HS) all scored a goal against the Yellow Jackets.
Freshman Tristan Parece (Kelowna, BC/Kelowna Secondary HS) finished the game with nine saves in his first game at Calvin.
The Knights return to action on Feb. 20 they travel to Centre.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Calvin put together a standout day of performances at a pair of weekend invitationals on Friday. A group of Calvin distance runners competed at the Grand Valley State Big Meet while the bulk of Calvin's team competed at the Aquinas College Little Meet.
At the GVSU Big Meet, senior Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) came up with a season-best performance in the 5,000 meters, clocking in with a time of 14:44.22 that places him 12th on the NCAA III indoor performance list.
Freshman Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) also had a season-best time of 14:57.96 in the event.
At the Aquinas College Little Meet, junior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, IL/Mahomet-Seymour HS) took first in the mile run with a time of 4:28.02.
Sophomore Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) had a monster evening, wining the 400 meters in a season-best time of 50.22 and the 200 meters in a time of 23.26. His 400 meter time places him 38th on the NCAA III indoor performance list.
Freshman Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian Academy) continued to impress, taking second in the long jump (20-10) and fourth in the 60 meter dash (7.45) while senior Cole Evans (Chicago, IL/Walther Lutheran HS) was fifth in the 60 meters (7.48).
In the 800 meters, senior Jeff Meitler (Berlin, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) took first place with a time of 1:59.29 while senior Matt Oram (Toledo, Oh./Toledo Christian HS) was third (2:01.62).
Perhaps the highlight of the night for the Calvin men however came from senior Lucas Wolters (Vincennes, Ind./South Knox HS) who took first place in the pole vault with a career-best vault of 15-9 1/4 that places him ninth on the current NCAA III indoor performance list. Junior Nathan Marcus (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also had a career-best vaul of 14-9 1/2 that placed him in third place.
In the shot put, junior Eric Jipping (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) took second with a season-best throw of 47-3 1/4 while freshman Brendan VanHouten (Comstock Park/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second in the weight throw with a season best mark of 47-5.
As a team, Calvin finished fourth in the final standings at the Aquinas College Little Meet with 108 points.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin women's track and field team put together several sterling performances at Friday invitationals. A group of Calvin distance athletes competed at the GVSU Big Meet while the bulk of Calvin's team competed at the Aquinas College Little Meet Friday evening.
At the GVSU Big Meet, senior McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) clocked in with a season-best time of 5:02.73 in the mile run that places her 29th on the NCAA III indoor performance list.
Junior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Preparatory HS) had a season-best time of 17:55.45 in the 5,000 meters as did freshman Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) with a time of 18:04.71. Sophomore Kate McLain (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also came in with a solid time of 18:49.27 in the 5K.
At the Aquinas College Little Meet, sophomore Bethany Love (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) had a breakthrough performance, winning the shot put with a career-best heave of 41-10 which places her 24th on the NCAA III indoor performance list. Love also won the weight throw with a career-best throw of 50-0. Senior Stacie Mead (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) had stellar efforts in both events, placing second in the shot put (37-11 1/2) and third in the weight throw (41-0 1/4).
In the 800 meters, sophomore Caroline Boss (Charlevoix/Charlevoix) took first place in a time of 2:21.24. Junior Carissa Weis (Mount Prospect, IL/Mount Prospect HS) won the triple jump with a leap of 34-7.
In the 60 meter hurdles, senior Maria Steblay (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie HS) took third with a season-best time of 9.75. Sophomore Maggie LaLonde (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) took fourth in a time of 1:05.27. Freshman Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) took second in the high jump (4-11 3/4). Freshman Annalane Miller (Dexter/Dexter HS) was fourth in the pole vault (9-5 1/4). Senior Ayooluwa Ayoola (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was seventh in the long jump (16-1 1/2).
As a team, Calvin took third in the final standings of the Aquinas College Little Meet with 107.5 points.
MEN'S TENNIS
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team started the 2016 campaign competing at the West Michigan Doubles Shootout. The Knights finished the day recording six victories, including four over Hope.
"It was nice to finally compete against other teams," said head coach John Ross. "It's nice to go out and play some new faces other than the ones we see every day at practice. Today was a nice start to the season for our guys."
The team of sophomore Matt VanWinkle and junior Taylor Asfour went 1-2 on Friday in the A Flight. The duo started the day falling to Kristoff Saari and Daymon Johnson of Aquinas, 8-3. They came up just short to Matthew Boyle and Mike Digby of Davenport, 9-8 (5). The Knights finished the day winning a rivalry match over Christian Rhoades and Mark VanderStoep of Hope, 9-8 (2).
In Flight B, the Calvin duo of senior Matt Buesing and sophomore David Brown started the day defeating the Hope team of Sam Kreps and Justin Folkert, 8-6. They then dropped a match to Ryan Fedewa and Kenny Garstcki of Aquinas, 8-6. The doubles pair then lost to the Davenport duo of Kevin Slagh and Juan Phillip Van Antwerpen, 8-5. The junior duo Jared Doezema and Anthony Vroon started the day falling to Slagh and Van Antwerpen, 8-4. The Knights dropped their second match to the Hope duo of Michael Kiley and Andrew Klein, 8-2. Doezema and Vroon would end the day on a high note beating the Hope team of Kreps and Folkert, 8-4.
In the Round Robin Bracket A, the team of sophomore Christopher Dausman and freshman Andrew Airgood finished the day 1-2. The Knights picked up a win over Grant Wunderlich and Nate Weedlreyer of Hope
The tri of freshman Jason Wolters, junior Gene Hill and freshman Charlie Fahr picked up two victories in the Round Robin Bracket B. The Knights defeated the Aquinas team of Evan Taylor and Tien-Ahn Tran, 7-5. They finished the day defeating Austin Hendrick and Dan Ribbink of Cornerstone, 6-3.
The Knights return to action on March 4 as they travel to Ripon.
