GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin hockey team picked up a big victory on senior night, where they recognized seniors John Conz and Charles Kinston at the Eagles Ice Center on Friday night. The Knights defeated rival Aquinas, 4-1. The win earned Calvin its first Midwest College Hockey Conference division title in 10 years. Calvin improves to 20-5-1 on the season and 10-1 in MCHC play.
"This is our first league title in ten years," said Coach Mike Petrusma. "Aquinas was a very good opponent. We've had some signature wins this year, like sweeping Hope earlier in the year. "
A lot of airborne pucks led to an interesting and fast paced start to the game. The first period saw both goalies shine, with both netminders keeping the puck out of the net for the first 20 minutes. Freshman Thomas Rietema had a strong, last effort attempt with a forceful shot on goal to close the period.
With 13 minutes left in the second period, sophomore David Zwiers got the Knights on the board first. Zwiers lasered the puck in the back of the net with an assist to junior Ryan Betts.
The Knights struck quickly into the third period to double up the Saints. Freshman Keegan Weckesser snuck one past the Aquinas keeper with 18:46 remaining in the third quarter. Senior Charles Kingston was credited with an assist on senior day.
Aquinas ran into a tough Calvin penalty kill on Friday. Junior Cameron Bell scored a short-handed goal from junior Ryan Racanelli who picked up a rebound off of the Aquinas keeper.
With 4:25 left in the game, Aquinas made a last attempt to fight back with a goal from Bill Warren. This attempt was quickly overrun by Cameron Bell with another goal, 59 seconds later, assisted by junior Jordan Duncan. The final buzzer sounded with the score at 4-1.
Calvin had 48 shots on goal and Aquinas had 31 shots on the night.
Freshman Alex Gross recorded 30 saves in the victory.
"Last year we had a pretty good run, but we fell short at Nationals," said Kingston. "Tomorrow we just have to get back at it and get ready for the rest of the season."
With the win tonight, the Calvin men's hockey team has already won the MCHC West league title and is awaiting the revealing of the rankings this upcoming week, where Calvin is hoping to take the second automatic bid for nationals. The knights face Aquinas again tomorrow night, February 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center, Michigan. The Knights return home next weekend as they host the MCHC Tournament.
