MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin 148, Kalamazoo 93
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 13 Knights sailed over the Kalamazoo Hornets on Senior Day at the Venema Aquatic Center on Saturday, 148-93. The victory propels the Knights to 9-3 on the season.
"It was good to be back in our pool," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "After a few road contests, it was a great senior day, there were a lot of good swims in the results. We are looking forward to our conference championship."
The Knights started the day by winning the 200 medley relay, the team of sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia), senior Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon), junior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) and freshman Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) won with a time of 1:34.86.
Freshman Stephen Barrett (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) was victorious in the 1000 freestyle at 10:39.86.
Freshman Andrew Kasper (Batava, Ill./Marmion Academy) kept the win streak going in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall at 1:44.78.
Calvin recorded the top-four times in the 50 freestyle, senior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) picked up the victory on Senior Day with a winning time of 21.48. In second place was fellow senior (Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) at 21.49. Freshman Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) finished in third place at 22.32 and freshman Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) rounded out the top-four at 22.47.
Brett Stoughton tallied a victory in the 100 butterfly for the Knights at 51.89.
Mitch Schroder picked up his second Senior Day victory in the 100 freestyle, winning with a time of 47.21. Andrew Kasper followed behind in second place at 48.06 and Jared Britton recorded a third-place finish at 48.35.
Sophomore Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) was victorious on the 3-meter boards, with a score of 295.35.
The senior class kept the winning on Saturday, this time in the 100 breaststroke as Johnson Cochran touched the wall five seconds before anyone else at 57.92. Cochran also finished in second place in the 200 IM at 1:59.40.
Senior Paul Freeman (Kensington, Md.) placed 10th in the 50 freestyle at 24.81 and took second place in the mixed 200 butterfly at 2:26.85.
Senior Caleb Meindertsma (Annandale, Va./Trinity Christian) finished the 500 freestyle in third place at 4:57.97.
The Knights finished the day winning the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Mitch Schroder, junior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), Andrew Kasper and Jared Britton won with a time of 1:25.53.
The Knights return to the pool in two weeks as Calvin will host the MIAA Championships at the Venema Aquatic Center from Feb. 17-20.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Kalamazoo 123, Calvin 120
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Kalamazoo Hornets edged the No. 18 Knights on Senior Day at the Venema Aquatic Center on Saturday, 123-120. Calvin won four events on the day and moves to 7-6 on the year.
"It was good to be back in our pool," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "After a few road contests, it was a great senior day, there were a lot of good swims in the results. The women almost pulled off the victory with winning only four events, which is almost impossible in a scored college meet, we are looking forward to our conference championship."
Senior Megan Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded the first Calvin victory on Senior Day in the 200 freestyle. Schroder touched the wall with a winning time of 1:58.62, her fastest time of the year. In second place was freshman Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) at 1:58.78.
Schroder added to her senior day by finishing in second place in the 100 backstroke at 1:01.46.
Senior Alayna Gallegos (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) earned a pair of second-place finishes on senior day. In the 200 IM she finished with a time of 2:21.03 and at 1:02.78 in the 100 butterfly.
Sophomore Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle, winning with a time of 51.16.
In the 500 freestyle, Anna Serino was victorious with a time of 5:17.19, winning by over five seconds.
Calvin finished the day winning the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Megan Schroder, sophomore Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), freshman Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) and Abby VanHarn won with a time of 1:38.65.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
A small group of Calvin track and field athletes competed at the Mike Lints Open on the campus of Grand Valley State University Saturday afternoon.
Competing in fields comprised largely of Division II institutions, the Calvin women finished 12th with nine points while the Calvin men finished 17th with eight points.
On the women's side, Calvin picked up points in the 5,000 meters as junior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Preparatory HS) took sixth with a time of 18:16.20 while junior Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) was sixth (18:16.20). Sophomore Caroline Boss (Charlevoix/Charlevoix HS) also scored, taking eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.32.
On the men's side, Calvin had two runners score in the 5,000 meters as junior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) was third (15:08.00) and sophomore Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) seventh (15:22.22).
Both Calvin teams will now prepare to compete at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Aquinas College next Friday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Trine 80, Calvin 67
ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men's basketball team dropped an 80-67 decision at Trine University Saturday afternoon. The Knights dropp to 8-11 overall and to 3-5 in MIAA play.
In the first half, the lead changed hands 14 times with the final change coming with 16 seconds left as Trine senior Jared Holmquist hit a fadeaway jumper to put Trine up 33-31.
Calvin tied the game at 39 on a three-pointer by sophomore Michael Wilks (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) early in the second half. A free throw by senior Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) later pulled the Knights within four at 50-46 with 9:26 remaining.
Trine then went on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes to build a 65-60 advantage and never looked back in pulling away for the win.
Wilks led Calvin in scoring with 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line.
Junior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell HS) had 13 points while freshman Carlos Amoros (Wyoming/Wyoming HS) had nine points and Daley eight points.
Will Dixon poured in a game-high 29 points for Trine while Holmquist 23 points and eight boards.
Calvin held a 33-31 rebounding advantage but shot just 35.5 percent from the floor in the second half while Trine shot 57.7 percent over the final 20 minutes of play. Calvin was 15-of-20 from the free throw line while Trine was 25-of-28.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 104, Great Lakes Christian 18
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 20 Knights cruised over Great Lakes Christian on Saturday afternoon, 104-18. The non-conference win moves Calvin to 15-4 on the season.
"It is always nice to pick up a win," said head coach John Ross. "It was good to get some girls some time that they do not typically get. But we now need to focus on next week. We have to go on the road and face two really good teams in Albion and Trine."
The win was highlighted by every Calvin player scoring in the victory. The Knights were led by freshman Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) with a career-high 12 points and a career-high seven assists. Also with a career-high seven assists was sophomore Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Skyline) who finished with a team-high and career-high seven steals and a career-best six rebounds.
Senior Jeana Sybesma (Dallhart, Texas/Dallhart) picked up a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Knights. Saturday marked the first double-double in her career, with 10 points.
Sophomore Natalie Voss (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Hills Lutheran) recorded four career records on Saturday. Voss scored 11 points in the victory with three three-point baskets. She tallied five rebounds and led the Knights with two blocks, that ties her career best.
The Knights broke a school record on Saturday, making 18 three-point baskets.
The Knights return to the court on Wednesday as they return to MIAA action at Albion. The game is set to start at 7:30 against the Britons.
