Luurtsema Named MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week;
Stoughton Named MIAA Men's Swimmer of the Week

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
For the first time in her career, Calvin College sophomore Bre Luurtsema has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women's basketball.

A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Luurtsema averaged 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game last week in leading Calvin to conference victories over Trine and Olivet.

In an 81-52 win over Trine last Wednesday, Luurtsema scored a career-high 24 points on 11 of 14 shooting from the field. In Saturday's 79-77 overtime win at Olivet, she converted a pair of free throws with six-tenths of a second remaining to lift the Knights to the win. She finished the game against Olivet with 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, notching her second double-double of the season in the process. Over the course of the week, she also tallied six assists and six steals while converting 65.0 percent (13 of 20) of her field goal attempts and 75.0 percent (9 of 12) of her free throw tosses.

In conference games, Luurtsema is currently ranked sixth in the MIAA in scoring (14.2) and rebounding (7.4) average. She is also tied for third in steals-per-game (2.40) and is ninth in free throw percentage (.714).

Calvin is currently ranked 19th by D3hoops.com and 14th by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The Knights are 10-3 overall and tied for first place in the MIAA standings with Hope at 5-0 in league play. Calvin will host Adrian Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has named Brett Stoughton the Swimmer of the Week. Stoughton helped the No. 10 Knights defeat Alma and Hope last weekend.
Stoughton, a junior from Centerville, Indiana, is being honored as Swimmer of the Week for the third time in his career.
On Friday, Stoughton took first place against Alma in the 100 butterfly with a winning time of 52.97.
He also helped down archrival Hope on Saturday, he started off the meet as a part of the winning 200 medley relay with sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia), junior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) and freshman Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason). He also finished in first place in the 200 butterfly, where he clocked in at 1:58.40.
He swam an exhibition times on Saturday of 52.10 in the 100 butterfly and 2:02.36 in the 200 IM.
Stoughton and the Knights return to action on Saturday as they travel to Albion to face the Britons.
