Swimming and Diving Teams Down Alma in Dual Meet Action;
Track and Field Teams Take Third at Aquinas Invite
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming and diving team improved to 5-2 with a 128-25 victory over Alma on Friday night. The Knights took first place in every event on the night.
"We shook the rust off tonight," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "It was good to be back in the pool tonight. It is never easy to get back after break and we are really looking forward to tomorrow."
The team of freshman Andrew Kasper (Batava, Ill./Marmion Academy), freshman Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), junior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) and senior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) took first place in the 200 medley relay at 1:40.01.
Sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia) touched the wall first in the mixed 1000 freestyle at 10:38.55.
Sophomore Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) recorded a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.01.
In the 50 freestyle, sophomore Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) took first place at 22.32. DeYoung also won the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 48.90.
Freshman Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) earned his first victory at Calvin in the 200 IM at 2:09.86.
Junior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) finished in first place in the 100 butterfly at 52.97.
Mitch Schroder finished the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 54.85.
Ben Holstege recorded a first-place time of 5:08.48 in the 500 freestyle.
In the 100 breaststroke, Skyler Fish finished in first place at 1:01.29.
On the boards, junior Dirk Tanis (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) won on the 1-meter platform with a score of 283.42. On the 3-meter board, sophomore Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) finished in first place with a score of 266.02
The relay team of Eli Holstege, Skyler Fish, senior Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) and freshman Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.36
The Knights return to action on Saturday for a showdown with rival Hope College. The action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Kresge Natatorium in Holland, Michigan.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving team got off to a strong start in 2016, downing the Alma Scots, 138-61. The win improves Calvin to 6-2 on the season. Calvin won 10 of 12 events on Friday.

The team of freshman Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan), junior Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux City, Iowa/Unity Christian), sophomore Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), and senior Megan Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) started the night taking first place in the 200 medley relay at 1:56.61.
In the 50 freestyle, freshman Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) took first place at 25.73.
Freshman Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) recorded a first-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.88.
Abby VanHarn was victorious in the 100 butterfly, with a winning time of 1:02.64.
Freshman Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) clocked in a first-place time in the 100 freestyle at 58.09.
Meg Schroder recorded a first-place time of 5:30.38 in the 500 freestyle.
In the 100 breaststroke, Adrienne Wesselius won with a time of 1:12.70.
Sophomore Nicole Langerak (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) owned the boards on Friday night, taking first place on the 1-meter at 253.49 and first place on the 3-meter at 263.92.
The Knights finished the night winning the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Anna Serino, Megan Schroder, junior Karine Rose (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and Alyssa Oezer won with a time of 1:45.63

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's track and field team opened its indoor season with a third place finish at the Aquinas College Odd Distance Invitational with a team score of 89 points. Davenport took first with 189 points followed by Aquinas in second with 158.
Friday's competition featured a variety of events held at distances that are not part of the usual lineup for indoor track and field but allowed athletes a chance to compete at a different change of pace.
Senior Eric Jipping (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) took home a win in the shot put, winning with a thorw of 47-0 3/4. Jipping was one of two Calvin winners on Friday as sophomore Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) won the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:48.82.
In the 1,000 meters, junior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, IL/Mahomet-Seymour HS) took fourth with a time of 2:42.09.
In the 600 meters, freshman James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) had a strong debut performance, taking fourth in a time of 1:28.12.
In the high jump, junior Jeiel Burrell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second with a jump of 5-7.
Freshman Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) also had a strong debut, taking second in the long jump (20-5 3/4) and third in the triple jump (41-1 3/4).
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes at the Grand Valley State Eubanks Open.

Sophomore Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ./Eastern Christian HS) led the way by winning the long jump (17-4 1/4) and taking second in the 60 meter hurdles (9.42).
Sophomore Bethany Love (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood HS) also had a banner night, winning the shot put with a throw of 38-3 1/2.
In the 3,000 meters, freshman Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) took second in a time of 10:41.80. In the 1,000 meters, sophomore Caroline Boss (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix HS) was third in a time of 3:13.98.
In the triple jump, freshman Madison Orth (Soldotna, AK/Cook Inlet Academy) was second with a jump of 32-9.
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes at the Grand Valley State Eubanks Open.
