Women's Basketball Falls to Top-Ranked Thomas More / Men's Basketball Clipped at Anderson)

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Thomas More 85, Calvin 69

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 1 Saints proved to be too much for the No. 12 Knights on Saturday afternoon. Thomas More improves to 8-0 with the 85-69 victory. The Knights move to 7-2 on the year.
"Thomas More is a really good team," said head coach John Ross. "It is going to take a really good team to beat Thomas More. They came in here and they did a really good job rebounding. There are a lot of things we can learn from today."
The Knights cut the Thomas More lead to two points with 4:00 left in the second quarter at 29-27. Thomas More would finish the quarter on a 12-2 run and not look back from there.
Calvin would periodically chip away at the lead but it would not be enough. The Knights drains eight three-point baskets in the second half.
Sophomore Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) led the Knights on Saturday with 17 points. Spayde has a team-high five three-point baskets.
Both Junior Anna Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) and senior Tiffany Karger (Cedar Springs, Mich./Cedar Springs) had 12 points for Calvin.
Sophomore Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) had a team high eight rebounds.
Senior Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) led the Saints with 31 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) recorded 18 points with both junior Kirsten Paul (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Christian) and sophomore Nikki Kiernan (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) had 12 points.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 29 as they face Allegheny at the Capital Tournament in Bexley, Ohio.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Anderson 85, Calvin 77

ANDERSON, Ind. - The Calvin men's basketball team dropped an 85-77 decision at Anderson University Saturday afternoon. Calvin (4-5) led for a good portion of the first half but a late first half surge by Anderson switched the momentum and Knights were unable to recover.

Calvin led 13-7 midway through the first half and held a 29-26 advantage with four minutes left but Anderson (5-3) ended the half on a 14-7 run to build a 40-36 lead at the break.

The Anderson lead bumped to double-digits early in the second half on a three-pointer by Nathaniel Acree that up the Ravens up 48-37. Acree drained another triple moments later to put Anderson up 51-39.

Calvin whittled the Anderson lead down to seven points at 64-57 on a layup by senior Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with 7:43 remaining.

Acree drained another triple to put Anderson up 69-60 but Calvin closed to within four at 73-69 on a three-point play by sophomore Tony Canonie (South Haven/South Haven HS) with 3:39 left.

Calvin got no closer than six the rest of the way however as Anderson connected on five of six free throw attempts inside the final minute of play to seal the win.

Junior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell HS) led Calvin with 20 points to go with seven rebounds. Daley had 17 points while Canonie had 12 and sophomore Mike Siegel (Fremont, Mich./Fremont HS) 11 off the bench.

Cole Hartman led Anderson with 18 points while Brett Anderson had 16 and Acree 15.

The Ravens connected on 53.3 percent of their field goal attempts overall while Calvin shot just 40.6 percent from the field.

Anderson was 8 of 19 (.421) from three-point range while Calvin was 5 of 21 (.238). Calvin connected on 16 of 24 (.667) of its free throw attempts while Anderson was 13 of 20 (.650). Calvin held a 41-37 rebounding advantage overall.

Calvin returns to action on December 29 when it faces second-ranked Whitworth College (Wash.) at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas.
