Women's Basketball Rains Down Threes in Conference Win Over Albion
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 95, Albion 71
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A blistering three-point attack propelled the nationally-ranked Calvin women's basketball team to a 95-71 conference victory over Albion Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena.
Ranked 12th by D3hoops.com, Calvin connected on 14 of 30 attempts from three-point range to roll to the win.
Calvin led 44-29 at halftime and then connected on 8 of 14 attempts from three-point territory in the second half to run away with the win.
Calvin (7-1 overall, 3-0 MIAA) held a 47-30 rebounding advantage led by junior Anna Timmer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) who notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Bre Luurtsema (Holland/Holland Christian HS) pumped in a team-high 18 points to go with four assists and five boards. Sophomore Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) had 14 points, five assists and four three-pointers. Senior Kally Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had 10 points and three assists while senior Tiffany Karger (Cedar Springs/Cedar Springs HS) tossed in 12 points on the strength of 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the long line.
Seven different players connected on at least one three-point field goal for the Knights.
Albion (1-6 overall, 0-2 MIAA) was led in defeat by Jay Bard with 18 points while Oreyana Curry had 13 points. Zoe Wilson chipped in with nine.
Calvin's team total of 29 assists was its second-highest total of the season.
"It was another good team win," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "It was good to see a lot of different players contribute and when our three-point shots are falling, it makes things a lot easier. We still have things to work on defensively but our effort today was good. Trying to find energy around first semester exams is never easy and I was pleased with our energy today."
Calvin will now prepare to host the defending Division III national champion Saints of Thomas More College next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. Thomas More is currently 5-0 and recently returned last year's D3hoops.com National Player of the Year Sydney Moss to the lineup.
"It doesn't get any more challenging than next Saturday," said Ross. "They (Thomas More) return virtually everyone from last year's (championship) team. If you're a fan of women's basketball, next Saturday would be a great opportunity for fans to come out and watch both teams play."
