MEN'S BASKETBALL
Aquinas 87, Calvin 77
The Calvin men's basketball team dropped its second game in as many days at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic, falling 87-77 to Aquinas Saturday evening at Cornerstone's Mol Arena.
Calvin (2-3) played from behind for all but the opening 18 seconds of the game. Aquinas (7-3) built a 30-15 advantage with 7:39 remaining in the first half. Calvin used a 12-5 run over the final five minutes of the half to close to within seven at halftime, trailing 39-32.
Calvin closed to within five points on three situations in the second half but could not get any closer.
Calvin trailed 73-67 on a jumper from sophomore Michael Wilks (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) with 5:46 remaining but Zac VanBeek of Aquinas responded with a three-pointer that put the Saints Up 76-67. The triple was one of several clutch shots that VanBeek was able to connect on in stemming Calvin's comeback tide.
A three-point play by senior Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) brought Calvin to within 77-70 with just under three minutes remaining but VanBeek hit another jump shot to keep the Knights at bay.
Calvin was led in defeat by Daley who tossed in 17 points while earning a spot on the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic all-tournament team. Senior Austin Parks (Niles/Niles HS) had 15 points on the strength of five three-point field goals. Junior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell HS) added 11 points.
VanBeek led all scorers with 20 points while Jake Bullock had 19 points. VanBeek was named to the all-tournament team.
Calvin shot 47.1 percent overall while Aquinas shot 49.2 percent from the floor. Aquinas held a 37-36 rebounding advantage and connected on 18 of 24 attempts (.750) from the free throw line while Calvin was 7 of 11 (.636) from the charity stripe.
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes against Carthage in a tournament scheduled to be played at Hope College.
