GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The rain and Bulldogs could not stop the Knights on Wednesday afternoon at Zuidema Field. Calvin defeated Adrian, 4-0, to improve to 13-2-1 on the year and 11-0-1 in the MIAA. The victory extends the unbeaten streak to 14-straight match and keeps Calvin three points ahead of the second-place Flying Dutch of Hope in the MIAA standings.
"I think that we came out and did what I asked them to do," said head coach Mark Recker. "We put pressure on their goal. My challenge to the team is that we just need to be efficient."
Senior Paige Capel (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) got Calvin on the board in the sixth minute. Capel dribbled into the box and tallied her seventh goal of the season.
The Knights struck again in the 21st minute, this time senior Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) put the ball in the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season. Paige Capel was credited with an assist on the play.
The teams were rushed off the field with 7:52 remaining in the first half due to a thunderstorm in the area. The delay did not slow Calvin down with the Knights outshooting the Bulldogs in the first half, 11-3.
Calvin continued to pepper the Adrian net in the second half and was finally able to break through in the 81st minute when junior Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) scored with senior Christina Drost (Denver, Colo./Denver Christian) getting an assist.
Freshman Mackenna Nesky (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) scored her first-career goal at Calvin with 24 seconds remaining in the match.
The Calvin defense picked up its 10th shutout of the season with the win on Wednesday. Senior Holly Ellerbroek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) picked up two saves and the victory in 80 minutes of play. Freshman Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) picked up a save in the final ten minutes of play.
The Knight defense has not given up a goal in the last 558 minutes of play. Calvin hasn't given up a goal in the month of October.
Calvin outshot the Bulldogs on Wednesday, 30-7.
