Women's Soccer Tops Trine - Moves Into Sole Possession of First Place in MIAA Standings

Calvin 3, Trine 0

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin women's soccer team remained unbeaten in MIAA action defeating Trine, 3-0. The Knights improve to 10-2-1 on the year and 8-0-1 in the conference. The victory extends the Calvin unbeaten streak to 11-straight matches. Trine falls to 1-9-1 and 0-8-1 in the MIAA.
With the win, Calvin takes over sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings, three points ahead of Hope which dropped a 2-1 decision at Kalamazoo Tuesday evening.
The teams went into halftime tied at zero, but there was no shortage of shots for the Knights. Calvin bombarded Trine with 14 shots in the first half, with Trine finishing the half with two.
Calvin got on scoreboard in the 60th minute with a goal from senior Paige Capel (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian), Capel dribbled in on a breakaway and but the ball in the upper half of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Senior Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) was given an assist on the play.
Capel was not finished, she extended the Calvin lead in the 78th minute, where she again had a breakaway and put the ball in the back of the net. The goal was the sixth of the season for Capel and Ten Harmsel earned her second assist of the day.
A minute later, freshman Bekah Maguire (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) tallied her second goal of the season, winning the ball close to the net then scoring. Junior Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) assisted on the goal. The Knights have not given up a goal in their last 269 minutes of play.
The Calvin defense picked up its seventh shutout of the season on Wednesday. Senior Holly Ellerbroek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) recorded one save in 84 minutes of play. Freshman Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) finished the final six minutes.
Calvin outshot Trine on Wednesday, 30-2. The 30 shots are the most all season for the Knights.
The Knights look to extend their win streak on Tuesday as they host Albion. The action is slated to begin at 4 p.m. from Zuidema Field.
