Men's Golf Bolts Into First Place in MIAA Standings Behind Watermark Win;
Calvin Fall Sports Athletes Receive Weekly Honors From MIAA

MEN'S GOLF

CASCADE - The Calvin men's golf team protected its home turf Monday afternoon, claiming first place at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by the Knights at the Watermark Country Club.

The Knights took first place with a team score of 296, finishing eight strokes ahead of second place Trine and 13 strokes ahead of third place Hope.

With two league rounds left to go in the MIAA fall season, Calvin now has a 12-stroke lead over Hope in the overall MIAA standings and a 17-stroke lead over Trine.

Calvin will travel to Adrian on Saturday (October 3) for the seventh MIAA Jamboree of the season and then close the MIAA regular season on October 6 at the Wuskowhan Player's Club in West Olive, home course of Hope College.

Calvin was led up front by the one-two punch of sophomores John Van Noord (Troy/Oakland Christian HS) and Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) as Van Noord claimed medalist honors with a one-under par round of 71 while VanScoyk was second with an even par round of 72.

Sophomore Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morning Star Academy) also came up with a clutch round of 75 to finish in a tie for fourth place individually. Freshman Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) followed with a 78 while senior Justin Crow (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 81.

Van Noord and VanScoyk are now both tied for the league lead in the MIAA overall individual standings with league averages of 73.3 strokes-per-round.

"We wanted to protect our home course and we did that today which I am very pleased with," said Calvin men's golf coach Brian Bolt. "We are in the position that we wanted to be in at this point of the season but we also still have a long ways to go. There is much work to be done and it starts again on Saturday."

Saturday's MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian will be held at the Lenawee Country Club at 1 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has named Calvin midfielder Paige Capel as the league's Women's Soccer Players of the Week for matches through Sept. 27.
Capel, a senior from Hudsonville, scored four goals in a pair of wins by Calvin last week to help extend the Knights' win streak to eight. Capel scored the game-winning goal, her first of the year; in the 11th minute of a 3-0 win at Saint Mary's on Wednesday. She netted her second goal of the day in the 80th minute. On Saturday Capel started the scoring again with a goal in the fifth minute of a 6-1 victory over Alma. She later assisted on the game winner on a cross and finished the day with another goal in the 78th minute.

Capel is now tied for 11th place on the Calvin career list for points (97) and is tied for 10th place in assists (22) and 15th in goals (33).

Calvin is currently on an eight-game win streak. The Knights are 8-2-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the MIAA. Calvin will host Olivet on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.

VOLLEYBALL

Calvin outside hitter Maggie Kamp earned Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Volleyball Co-Player of the Week honors on Monday for matches through Sept. 27.

Kamp, a senior from Orland Park, Ill., shareds Player of the Week laurels this week with Kate Hecklinski of Saint Mary's.

It marks the second straight week that Kamp claimed Player of the Week honors for the No. 5 Knights during a 3-0 week. She posted a double-double performance with 20 kills and 15 digs in a 3-0 win over Albion on Tuesday. Kamp added 10 kills on Friday in a sweep of Alma and recorded 11 digs in a 3-0 win over Heidelberg to finish the week. Kamp hit .427 overall for the week.

Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Trine University for a 6:30 p.m. match.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

For the second time in three weeks, Calvin College junior Zac Nowicki has been named the MIAA's Runner of the Week in men's cross country. A native of Comstock Park and a graduate of Calvin Christian High School, Nowicki finished the line the 8K MIAA Cross Country Jamboree course at the West Ottawa Golf Club first on Saturday to win the individual title in a time of 25:22.
He led the No. 15 Calvin squad to the team title with 22 points. A trio of Knights finished 1-2-3 at the top of the time sheet and Calvin placed all five scoring runners in the top 10 of the event.

Calvin is back in action on Friday when it competes at the Notre Dame Invitational.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

For the second time in three weeks, Calvin College junior Lauren Strohbehn has been named the MIAA's Runner of the Week in women's cross country. A native of Stillwater, Minnesota, Strohbehn is receiving the honor for the third time in her career.

A graduate of St. Croix Preparatory High School, Strohbehn crossed the finish line first at the 6K MIAA Cross Country Jamboree. She clocked in at 21:43 on the course at the West Ottawa Golf Club on Saturday to win the individual title.
Her top time helped the No. 9 Knights finished second as a team with 49 points behind first place No. 8 Hope at 26 points.

Calvin is back in action on Friday when it competes at the Notre Dame Invitational.
