CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 21, 2015
MEN'S GOLF
KALAMAZOO - The Calvin men's golf team moved back into first place in the overall MIAA standings with a first place triumph at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo College Monday afternoon at the Kalamazoo Country Club. Calvin finished Monday's round with a team score of 302, two strokes ahead of host Kalamazoo and four strokes ahead of Hope. Calvin now holds a one-stroke leave over Hope in the overall MIAA standings at the midpoint of the league season.
Sophomore John Van Noord (Troy/Oakland Christian HS) led the Calvin charge with a round of 73 that left him a tie for third place individually in Monday's round. Sophomore Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a round of 75.
Making his first appearance in the Calvin lineup in an MIAA competition this fall, sophomore Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morning Star Academy) came up with a round of 77 that was good for a tie for 13th place.
Senior Jason Zeigler (Mount Gilead, OH/Gilead Christian HS) followed with a 78 while senior Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 79.
"It was a challenge today as the greens were running as fast we've seen them this year," said Calvin men's golf coach Brian Bolt. "Every putt was challenging but the team responded well with a group effor. I am pleased that Matthew Lumbantoruan gave a solid effort today in his first league match. He sunk several clutch putts which was big for our our team. We have much work ahead but we are pleased with how our team is developing."
Connor Dwyer of Trine was the medalist on Monday with a round of 70.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Trine University at the Zollner Golf Club at 1 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) named Calvin midfielder Taylor Ten Harmsel and fellow teammate defender Kelsey Hiegel as the league's Women's Soccer Players of the Week for matches through Sept. 20.
Both players played integral parts in helping the Knights record three one-goal victories in league play last week to remain undefeated in the conference at 4-0 and extending Calvin's overall win streak to six straight matches.
Ten Harmsel, a senior from Holland, finished the week with a pair of goals including an overtime winner at Adrian to break the scoreless affair in the 92nd minute on Saturday. She also scored a goal in a home win over Kalamazoo on Thursday. Ten Harmsel finished the week with seven shots on goal in 18 attempts.
Hiegel, a senior from Mundelein, Ill., scored a rare game-winning goal as a defender in a 3-2 victory over Kalamazoo on Thursday. Her shot reached the top corner of the net from 20 yards out in the 26th minute. Hiegel helped anchor a defense that registered a pair of blank sheets and only two goals in three contests.
MEN'S SOCCER
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin defender Nick Groenewold as its Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for matches through Sept. 20.
Groenewold, a senior from Oak Brook, Ill., scored a rare goal as a defender in a 4-0 home win against Hope on Saturday. He was active on the offensive end last week with three shots on goal on eight shot attempts. Groenewold anchored a defense that posted a pair of clean sheets with a 3-0 shutout of Trine earlier in the week.
Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Alma for a 4 p.m. match in a meeting of undefeated MIAA teams.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin outside hitter Maggie Kamp has earned Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Volleyball Player of the Week Awards on Monday for matches through Sept. 20.
Kamp, a senior from Orland Park, Ill., claimed Player of the Week accolades. She hit over .225 in each of Calvin's matches during a 3-2 week that saw the Knights face multiple ranked squads. Kamp posted 10 kills or more in each match including 19 in a 3-1 upset of top-ranked Emory that saw her post a double-double with 14 digs. In the weekend finale against No. 9 Cal Lutheran she posted 24 kills and retrieved 18 balls on defense. She was later named to the all-tournament team at the Emory National Invitational.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Albion at 6:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
