MEN'S GOLF
BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin men's golf team remains on top of the MIAA standings after a solid performance at the second MIAA Jamboree of the year. Calvin tied for first place with Hope at Tuesday's MIAA Jamboree hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club with a team score of 293 strokes. Kalamazoo was a close third with a team score of 297. Through two 18-hole rounds, Calvin sits five strokes ahead of Hope in the overall team standings while Kalamazoo is eight strokes off the lead.
Senior Jason Zeigler (Mount Gilead, OH/Gilead Christian HS) led the way for Calvin by firing an even round of 72 that was good for fourth place individually. Sophomores Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and John Van Noord (Troy/Oakland Christian HS) were right behind with rounds of 73 that placed them in a tie for seventh place individually.
Senior Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) anchored the back end of the Calvin team score with a round of 75 while freshman Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) chipped in with a round of 78.
"The greens were hard and fast today with some tough pin placements so we had to play conservatively to post good scores," said Calvin men's golf coach Brian Bolt. "293 is an excellent team score and were pleased with the final result. Hope and Kalamazoo also played very well today and the league standings remain tight."
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at a league tournament hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
