CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR JUNE 24, 2015
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
For the second consecutive year, Erik Holstege of Calvin College has been named a Capital One Academic All-American.
A native of Keswick, Virginia, Holstege (Monticello HS) has been named to the 2015 Division III Capital One Academic All-America second team in the men's track and field/cross country division.
A year ago, Holstege was named to the Capital One Academic All-America third team in the men's track and field/cross country division.
At Calvin, Holstege was a two-time MIAA Most Valuable Field Event recipient and a three-time All-MIAA selection. He was also a team captain on three Calvin teams that captured MIAA titles.
He captured the MIAA title in the 110 high hurdles three consecutive years and also won MIAA triple jump (2014) and long jump (2015) titles during his Calvin career. He narrowly missed qualifying for the 2015 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the decathlon, posting a score of 6,153 points at the North Central Gregory Invitational last month.
Holstege was graduated from Calvin last month with a degree in biochemistry. A three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List, Holstege will attend medical school at the University of Virginia next fall.
Calvin student-athletes have now received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 112 times including five times during the 2014-15 academic year with Jordan Brink (men's basketball, 2nd team), Travis Vegter (men's soccer, 2nd team), Elise Biesboer (women's volleyball, 3rd team) and Maggie Kamp (women's volleyball, 1st team) having previously been honored.
