MIAA COMMISSIONER'S CUP ANNOUNCEMENT
For the second time in three years and for the 10th time in school history, Calvin has won the MIAA Commissioner's Cup. Calvin won the trophy with a total of 133 points, finishing eight points ahead of Hope (125).
The MIAA Commissioner's Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league's 20 sports for men and women. The final Commissioner's Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college's standings in eight of 10 sports for men and eight of 10 sports for women.
The Commissioner's Cup (All-Sports Award) has beene presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 35 times, followed by Kalamazoo 15, Albion 14, Calvin 10 and Alma 5.
In addition, Calvin has won the MIAA Men's All-Sports Award with 67.5 points with Adrian and Hope tying for second with 57.5 points. Calvin took second in the MIAA Women's All-Sports standings with 65.5 points with Hope taking first with 67.5 points.
The 2014-15 academic year has been a successful one for the Calvin athletics program as it captured 11 conference titles including 10 that were outright league crowns. Calvin competes in 19 of the 20 MIAA-sponsored sports. The Knights do not compete in football.
In the fall, Calvin claimed four MIAA titles as its men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's and women's cross country teams won league championships with the volleyball team sharing the title with Hope. During the winter season, Calvin took home four more titles with its men's and women's basketball and men's and women's swimming and diving teams winning outright championships. It marked the first time in MIAA athletics history that Calvin swept all four winter sports crowns.
This spring, Calvin added three more MIAA championships to the mix as its men's and women's track and field teams and its women's lacrosse team won outright league titles. The women's lacrosse championship is the first in school history.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin College sophomore Brett Stoughton has been named to the Division III Capital One Academic All-District team in the at-large division. The men's at-large division includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
A native of Centerville, Indiana, Stoughton is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration. A graduate of Centerville High School, Stoughton recently completed another standout season on the Calvin men's swimming and diving team.
At the MIAA Championships, Stoughton repeated as league champion in the 100 butterfly (50.00) and 200 butterfly (1:52.40) while setting a new Calvin record in the 200 butterfly in the process.
He was also part of Calvin's 400 medley relay team that qualified for the NCAA III Championships and placed 16th to earn honorable mention NCAA III All-America status. In 2014, he was part of Calvin's 400 medley relay team that placed 12th at the NCAA III Championships and also garnered honorable mention NCAA III All-America status.
Stoughton is a two-time All-MIAA selection. During the 2014-15 season, he was selected MIAA Swimmer of the Week once.
At the 2015 NCAA III Championships, Stoughton was named the men's swimming and diving recipient of the NCAA's Elite 89 Award for maintaining the highest cumulative grade point average of any male competitor at the national meet.
A finance major at Calvin, Stoughton carries a 4.0 grade point average.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL - Calvin College senior Erik Holstege closed out competition in the two-day decathlon event Wednesday afternoon at the North Central College Gregory Invitational. Holstege won the competition with a total of 6,153 points.
In Wednesday's competition, Holstege recorded a time of 15.23 in the 110 high hurdles and then went 107-2 in the discus. In the pole vault, he cleared the bar at 10-6. He then tossed the javelin 132 feet and closed out the competition with a time of 5:33.17 in the 1,500 meters.
