MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Hope 3
HOLLAND - With the pressure on, the Calvin men's tennis team delivered, defeating rival Hope 6-3 on Saturday to clinch a berth in next week's MIAA Tournament.
Calvin needed a win against Hope on Saturday to advance to the MIAA Tournament. If the Knights would have lost, a three-way tie for third place would have been created and the Knights would have been out of the tournament due to tie-breaker rules.
Calvin did not go down that road however as it swept the three doubles points. Sophomore Taylor Asfour and freshman Matt VanWinkle pulled off an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles while senior Tom Griffin and junior Matt Buesing won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Jared Doezema and Anthony Vroon also won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles, giving the Knights all the momentum heading into singles play.
Calvin then held serve, splitting the six singles points to register the win.
Griffin was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles while freshman David Brown (No. 5) and sophomore Gene Hill (No. 6) coasted to 6-0, 6-0 wins.
"It was a great team victory and I'm proud of the mental focus our team came in with today," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "We were disappointed by our effort at Alma on Friday. Give Alma credit for beating us but our execution Friday should have been better. We did a good job of putting that match behind us in short order and stepped up when we needed to today."
Calvin is now 9-8 overall and finishes tied for second in the MIAA standings with Adrian at 4-2. Due to a head-to-head tiebreaker with Adrian, Calvin gains the No. 2 seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament and will host the Bulldogs in an MIAA Tournament semifinal match next Thursday at 4 p.m.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Trine 1
The Calvin women's tennis team closed out its MIAA regular season campaign with an 8-1 win over the visiting Trine Thunder Saturday afternoon. Saturday's match marked the final regular season home match by Calvin seniors Megan Visser, Ali Roode and Courtney Selvius.
"It was great to come out with a win on Senior Day," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "All three seniors have been a big part of our success and sustaining this program during their careers. They have been exemplary student-athletes on and off the court at Calvin and we are very proud of them."
Calvin will now prepare for its MIAA Tournament match next Thursday. The Knights will be making their third appearance in the four-team MIAA Tournament in the last four years. "We missed the conference tournament last year," said VanHaitsma. "Getting back to the tournament was one of our primary goals this year and it feels good to accomplish that particular goal."

In game one, the Knights and Comets were tied after three innings at 2-2.
Olivet then plated seven in the top of the fourth, including a pair of two-RBI hits, to build a 9-2 advantage.
Calvin got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, which was matched by an Olivet run in the top of the sixth.
The Comets scored three more in the seventh to push its lead to 13-3.
The Knights responded with two in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run shot from Pollock, but could not complete the comeback as Calvin fell 13-5.
Junior Lydia Gildea went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Pollock finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
Freshman Makela Chapman took the loss in the circle.
For Olivet, Devon Mayse was 5-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Olivet got on the board in the third on an RBI double.
The Comets then took the lead in the fourth as a grand slam put Olivet on top 6-2.
Calvin drew within one with three runs in the top of the fifth, but a quick response from the Comets in the bottom of the fifth saw four runs put Olivet ahead 10-5.
The Comets then plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to induce the mercy rule with a 13-5 final score.
Freshman Kaley Frank was 2-for-4 in game two with one RBI, while Pollock was 1-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Sophomore Paige Groom took the loss in the circle.
For Olivet, Kris Forest was 2-for-4 with six RBI and two runs scored.
"We never really put it together; when we got good pitching our defense let us down; when we got good at bats we didn't get the pitching we needed," said head coach Tim Syrek. "The nice thing is, we have a lot of young kids coming back and they got a lot of valuable experience. I simply believe that we will be back in the tournament next year. I want us to grind out and get back to the tournament, winning 20-plus games and doing what Calvin is capable of doing."
"They are quality kids," said Syrek about the three honorees, playing in their final Calvin games. "They were kids that you love to coach and love to have on your team. Their legacy is greater than our win-loss record; their legacy is the relationships that they've made."
The Knights end their season at 10-22 overall and 4-12 in the MIAA.
Gildea finished the year with a final season batting average of .407 which ranks eighth on the Calvin single-season list. Her final season slugging percentage of .617 also ranks seventh on the Calvin single-season records list.
