Women's Tennis Defeats Adrian - Moves Into Third Place in MIAA Standings;
Men's Lacrosse Drops Regular Season Home Finale to Alma
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Adrian 1
The Calvin women's tennis team picked up its third consecutive victory and moved into sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings with an 8-1 win over visiting Adrian College Wednesday afternoon. The Knights are now 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA. Calvin can secure the third seed for next week's MIAA Tournament with a win over Trine on Saturday.
With temperatures hovering near 40' at match time, Wednesday's match was moved indoors to Calvin's Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Calvin gained quick command by winning all three doubles flights. Calvin's No. 1 doubles team of senior Megan Visser and sophomore Claire Spoelhof recorded an 8-3 victory. The tandem is now 11-10 in doubles competition together this year. Sophomore Ellie Benzel and freshman Jessica Bouma claimed an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles while the Calvin duo of freshman Kari Kroeze and sophomore Liz Turner won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Benzel and Bouma are now 8-6 in doubles play this year while Kroeze and Turner are 5-3.
At No. 1 singles, Visser ran her season record to 10-11 with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Benzel picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and is now 14-6 on the year. Spoelhof was a 6-4, 2-6, 10-2 winner at No. 3 singles while Bouma was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles. Bouma is now 15-7 on the year. Senior Ali Roode claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles and is now 14-4 on the year and is now 39-15 in singles during her Calvin career.
Calvin will now prepare to host Trine on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Alma 14, Calvin 2

The Calvin men's lacrosse team hosted Alma on Wednesday in its final home contest of the season.
Playing hard-nosed lacrosse right from the start, the Knights battled hard with the visiting Scots but fell 14-2.
The Scots took an early lead in the contest, scoring less than a minute after the opening whistle. Two more goals by the visitors saw them take a 3-0 lead after one quarter.
Alma continued to keep Calvin off the scoreboard in the second quarter, adding four goals in the period to hold a 7-0 advantage over the hosts at the break.
In the first half, the Scots outshot the Knights 25-7. Alma was 11-for-12 on clear attempts, while Calvin completed 3-of-6.
Four more goals in the third quarter saw the Scots lead increase to 11-0 after three quarters.
In the fourth, Calvin found the back of the net to get on the board. Sophomore Chris Griffin scored an unassisted, wraparound goal with 3:24 remaining in the game.
Senior Jonathon VanderLaan then added another goal just before time expired in the game, taking a pass from sophomore Joel Schaefer and ripping it past the Alma keeper.
The Scots, meanwhile, scored three goals in the fourth, claiming a 14-2 win over the Knights.
For the game, Alma outshot Calvin 50-17. The Scots also held a slim ground ball advantage at 33-32.
Sophomore Jake Horstman and freshman Tyson Butler led Calvin with five ground balls apiece. In goal, sophomore Mitchell Alexander made 17 saves.
"I liked the intensity that we came out with today," said head coach Kyle Hofstaedter. "Our team has been a group of fighters all year long. Seniors Luke Bosscher and Jonathon VanderLaan have given a lot for this program, and they played really tough in their final home game."
The Knights fall to 2-12 overall and 0-5 in the MIAA with the loss, while Alma moves to 11-4 and 4-1 in league play.
Calvin's final match-up of the season will be in Holland at Hope College on Saturday. The Knights and Flying Dutchmen will face-off at 1:00 p.m.
