Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader with the visiting Scarlet Hawks of Illinois Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon, falling by scores of 4-2 and 8-2.
In game one, Calvin cruised through the first five innings with a 2-0 lead. Calvin scored both of its runs in the third as senior Grant VanPutten doubled in Calvin's first run and junior Jordan VanderWall drove in another run on a sacrifice fly.
Calvin's pitching staff tossed shutout ball through five innings but Illinois Tech (17-4) used four hits in the sixth including a two-run homer to take a 3-2 lead. The Scarlet Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead.
Calvin threatened in the bottom of the seventh, placing runners on first and third but the Illinois Tech relief pitcher Michael Malfeo was able to get a game-inning strikeout to preserve the win.
Freshman Stephen Burt (0-1) took the loss for Calvin, striking out four and walking one in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Sophomore Austin Voigt went 3-for-3 in the loss for Calvin while junior catcher Jeff Murdoch had a pair of hits.
In game two, Calvin (11-15) forged a 2-2 tie in the third as VanderWall delivered a two-run RBI single with VanPutten racing all the way home from first base on the plate.
Illinois Tech again gained control in the sixth, scoring five runs on five hits and one Calvin error that that led to three unearned runs. Illinois Tech added one more run in the seventh and kept the Knights off the board in the bottom half to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Calvin had 10 hits in the loss but Illinois Tech had 12. VanPutten and VanderWall had two hits apiece as did freshman Nick Steigenga.
Senior Ben Guilfoyle took the loss for Calvin to fall to 3-4 on the year.
Brian Colon-Rodriguez proved to be a thorn in the side for Calvin in the twinbill as he went 6-for-8 at the plate with five RBI's and a pair of extra-base hits.

SOFTBALL
Cleary 5, Calvin 3
Calvin 11, Cleary 2
Calvin softball hosted Cleary University on Wednesday afternoon in a mid-season non-conference doubleheader.
The Knights split the pair with the Cougars, dropping game one 5-3 before rebounding 11-2 in the second game of the twinbill.
The Cougars took the lead early, scoring a run in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Cleary added a pair in the third, then Calvin got one back in the fourth. After another Cougar run in the fifth, the Knights had one last gasp in the seventh, down 5-1.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Calvin saw two runners aboard.
Junior Lydia Gildea hit a double into right center that brought a pair of runs home, bringing the score to 5-3.
Calvin could not come back from the entire deficit, however, as the next batter grounded out to the shortstop to see Cleary earn game one 5-3.
Gildea went 3-for-4 with two RBI in game one.
Freshman Makela Chapman pitched all seven innings, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs to take the loss.
In game two, the Knights jumped out to a quick start. Calvin more than doubled its game one run total in just the first inning, plating eight runs. Gildea hit a two-run RBI double for the Knights while senior Christie VanderMeer added a two-RBI single as part of the eight-run first.
After giving up a pair of hits in the first, freshman pitcher Sarah Rice settled down, retiring 11 straight batters as part of a strong pitching performance.
Calvin added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-RBI single from junior Caitlin Bell, to go up 11-0.
Cleary got two back in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to prevent the mercy-rule from applying as the Knights bounced back for an 11-2 victory.
Bell finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored while VanderMeer was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
In the circle, Rice scattered five hits, allowing just one earned run to earn her first collegiate win.
"I think our pitchers both threw well - what we're finding out is we really need to work on putting a complete game together," said head coach Tim Syrek. "The first game we made a couple of defensive mistakes early and gave them a couple runs, and we just didn't have enough to come back. In the second game, we go out and put up eight in the first inning and that makes life easy. Then you can go out and play relaxed."
Calvin moves to 9-17 on the year, while Cleary is now 5-17.
The Knights return to league play on Saturday. Calvin will host Adrian College, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
