WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 9, Urbana 7
By Mark DeHaan
Calvin women's lacrosse hosted Division II Urbana College on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. The Knights, despite not scoring a single goal in the second half, defeated Urbana 9-7.
Junior Carolyn Forbes opened up the scoring for Calvin just over a minute into the contest. The Blue Knights of Urbana responded as the visitors took advantage of a man-up opportunity to tie the game.
Back-to-back goals from freshman Amanda Davio put the Knights back in the lead at 3-1 with 25:14 to go in the first half. Urbana answered with one goal, then Calvin netted two more to go ahead 5-2 with 9:30 remaining in the opening period.
The Blue Knights scored just over a minute later, but Calvin then shut the visitors down while scoring the final four goals of the half to take a 9-3 advantage into the break. Calvin outshot Urbana 21-9 in the first half. The Knights went 8-for-8 on clear attempts, and picked up 18 ground balls compared to the Blue Knights 14.
In the second half, Calvin's offense stagnated. Two goals by Urbana saw the Knights lead cut to 9-5 with 22:47 remaining. The Blue Knights added another with 16:43 to go to cut their deficit to 9-6.
Calvin then saw strong play from its defense over the next 14 minutes as Urbana did not score again until just over two minutes remained on the clock. The Knights, leading 9-7, forced a turnover on Urbana then held the ball for the remaining time, holding on to the 9-7 victory.
Calvin held a 34-18 shots advantage by the end of the game, forcing Urbana into 14 turnovers. The Knights complete 15-of-16 clear attempts, and won 10-of-18 draw controls.
Individually, Davio led Calvin with four goals. Forbes added three, while senior Karissa Reed scored one and sophomore Emily Cefaratti contributed one goal and one assist.
Junior Corry Remy made five saves in net to earn the win.
"We had a good strong start - still, I think we were playing sloppy in the first half and we could have been much better protecting the ball offensively," said head coach Blake Boehm. "When it came down to it, our goalie stopped some shots and our defense shut down their offense."
Calvin improves to 5-5 with the win. The Knights return to conference play on Saturday as they travel to Albion College in a meeting of teams that will enter the game with 2-0 conference records.
Opening face-off between the Knights and Britons is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 5, Adrian 4
The Calvin men's tennis team moved to 6-4 overall and to 2-0 in the MIAA with a 5-4 victory over visiting Adrian College Tuesday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
The win comes a year after Adrian (15-4 overall, 2-1 MIAA) had handed Calvin a 5-4 defeat.
The Knights took control by claiming two of three doubles points in hard-fought fashion. Calvin's doubles tandem of freshman Matt VanWinkle and sophomore Taylor Asfour dropped a 9-7 decision at one doubles but junior Matt Buesing and senior Tom Griffin won 9-7 at two doubles and sophomore Gene Hill and sophomore Jared Doezema won 9-7 at three doubles.
The singles competition was then nip-and-tuck. Adrian claimed wins at two and three singles to take a 3-2 lead but Buesing completed a 6-2, 6-2 win at one singles to tie the score 3-3.
Freshman David Brown then gave Calvin a 4-3 lead after claiming a 6-3, 6-3 win at five singles. Sophomore Anthony Vroon then sealed the win by recording a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at six singles.
"This was definitely a team win," said veteran Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "In a match like this doubles points are so big and when we took two points there, we knew we had a strong chance to win. Adrian is a very improved program and this is a win that we feel very good about. We've got some grinders on this team. The key now is to keep on grinding."
Calvin will now prepare to compete in the MIAA/NCAC Challenge Friday and Saturday at Hope College. Calvin will take on Wabash and Oberlin on Friday and will then meet Wittenberg on Saturday.
