Calvin baseball hosted Olivet College on Saturday to complete a home-and-home conference series with the Comets.
After splitting a pair of games on Friday, the Knights won both at home, 7-1 and 18-9, to take three out of the four from the Comets.
In game one, Olivet opened the contest by plating a run in the top of the first inning.
The Knights responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. The second inning also saw senior Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) record his second hit of the day. With the hit, VanPutten became the career record holder for hits at Calvin College.
Another VanPutten single in the fourth inning brought in another Knights run.
Calvin scored one more in the fifth, then plated three insurance runs in sixth.
Backed by strong pitching from senior Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS), the Knights claimed a 7-1 win.
Schepers pitched all seven innings for a complete game performance, scattering four hits and striking out five.
At the plate, VanPutten went 3-for-4 with one RBI while both sophomore Patrick Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) and senior Peter Cupery (Holland/Holland Christian HS) were 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored each.
Calvin began game two with an impressive 11-run first inning.
Sophomore Matt Kotva (Elkhart, IN/Concord HS) had a double to right center to bring in two runs, while VanPutten also doubled to score a run.
The Knights scored two in the second, then added two more in the third to build a 15-0 lead.
Olivet got back into the game with a nine-run fourth, including a bases-clearing double.
Calvin's defense then shut the Comets down, holding Olivet scoreless for the remainder of the game.
The Knights offense, meanwhile, scored a run apiece in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, including a solo home from sophomore Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS), his sixth of the season.
In game two, Calvin claimed an 18-9 win.
Wolfe finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. VanPutten went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI, while senior Ben Wohl was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Kotva and senior Brian Exner (Niles/Brandywine HS) also contributed two hits apiece, also adding two RBI and a run scored each.
Sophomore Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) earned the win on the mound for the Knights.
"Schepers did a great job in game one, gave up the one run in the first inning then really settled in. We had some really good defense behind him, and offensively we kept chipping away and chipping away and doing the small things," said head coach John Rypel. "We didn't swing the bats well yesterday, and today we got back to using the whole field, being aggressive and getting the good pitch to hit. VanPutten led the way and Colt had a big home run."
With the wins, Calvin moves to 8-12 overall and 5-7 in conference play, while Olivet falls to 4-16 and 3-9 in the MIAA.
The Knights return to action on Thursday when Calvin hosts Albion. First pitch between the Knights and Britons is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

A windy day proved troublesome for Calvin's defense and its pitching staff as the Knights committed six errors in game one and nine in game two. A strong wind blowing out to left field also led to five home runs hit in the twinbill with three coming off the bats of Saint Mary's hitters.
In game one, Saint Mary's (14-6, 3-1 MIAA) overcame a 2-0 deficit with a seven-run fourth inning. Calvin used run-scoring singles from freshmen Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg/Edwardsburg HS) and Jessica Brasser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) to stay within striking distance at 7-4 but the Belles scored three in the fifth and five in the sixth to build a commanding 15-4 lead.

Calvin's lead crumbled in the bottom half of the fifth however as the Belles scored five unearned runs as the Knights committed four errors. Saint Mary's then added five insurance runs in the sixth with a three-run homer by Mackenzie Duncan the key blow.
Freshman Makela Chapman (Lowell/Lowell HS) took the hard-luck loss for Calvin as she was charged with 14 runs, only five of which were earned.
