CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 1, 2015
Women's Lacrosse Picks Up Win Over Olivet in Conference Opener;
Men's Tennis Falls to Spring Arbor
Calvin women's lacrosse opened up conference play against Olivet on a beautiful Wednesday evening.
The Knights entered with a 2-5 overall record, while Olivet was 4-3.
Behind strong possession and control of the middle of the field, Calvin claimed an 18-7 victory to begin the league season with a win.
The Knights dominated play from the opening whistle. Calvin scored the first six goals of the contest, with sophomore Emily Cefaratti netting three, to build a 6-0 lead with 19:47 remaining in the first half.
The Comets closed the gap to 8-4 with 12:06 to go, but the Knights scored six goals the remainder of the half, while holding Olivet goalless, to build a 14-4 lead at the break.
Calvin outshot the Comets 25-7 in the opening half. The Knights forced Olivet into 12 first half turnovers, and also held a 27-10 ground ball advantage at the break.
In the second half, Calvin's lead grew to a dozen as goals from seniors Karissa Reed and Lindsey Ryskamp put the Knights ahead 16-4.
Calvin then held a 12-goal edge on two more occasions, at 17-5 and 18-6, before the final score settled at 18-7.
The Knights outshot Olivet 37-16 for the contest, also forcing 14 turnovers while only committing seven. Calvin completed 8-of-9 clear attempts, and won the ground ball battle 35-16.
Individually, Cefaratti finished with seven goals, one assist, and nine ground balls. Reed tallied four goals and two assists, while junior Carolyn Forbes contributed four goals and six ground balls.
In net for the Knights, junior Corry Remy saved six shots.
Geri Merrell led Olivet with three goals, two assists, and three ground balls.
"Our pregame goals were to win the middle of the field, possessions were really important to us," said head coach Blake Boehm. "We had 35 ground balls to their 16, we converted all but one of our clears, and caused turnovers, we had twice as many as them with half as many turnovers - those are the determining factors. Our defense stayed strong. Olivet has some fast players, so at times it can be difficult to stay in front of them. For the most part, defensively, we stayed in front of them and kept our wits about us."
Calvin improves to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while Olivet falls to 4-4 and 0-1.
The Knights now look forward to Friday when they travel to Trine University. Scheduled start time against the Thunder is 1:00 p.m.
