Tennis Teams Open MIAA Slate with League Victories;
Men's Lacrosse Drops Road Contest at Cornell;
Baseball/Softball Contests Rescheduled
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Alma 2
ALMA - The Calvin women's tennis team opened its conference campaign with a 7-2 victory at Alma College. The Knights are now 6-5 overall.
Calvin took two of the three doubles points to take an early 2-1 lead. Freshmen Liz Turner and Kari Kroeze were 8-4 winners at three doubles while sophomore Ellie Benzel and freshman Jessica Bouma were 8-2 winners at two doubles.
Calvin then took five of the six singles points.
Winners for Calvin included Benzel at two singles, sophomore Claire Spoelhof at three singles, Bouma at four singles, senior Ali Roode at five singles and Kroeze at six singles.
Alma's points came at one doubles and one singles and both were close with Spoelhof and senior Megan Visser dropping a 9-8 decision at one doubles and Visser falling 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 at one singles to Megan Solano.
Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to rival Hope for a 4 p.m. match.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Albion 3
ALBION - Calvin opened its 2015 MIAA campaign with a 6-3 win at Albion Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-3 overall.
Calvin took control of the match by taking all three doubles points. Sophomore Taylor Asfour and freshman Matt VanWinkle were 8-4 winners at one doubles, senior Tom Griffin and junior Matt Buesing 8-5 winners at two doubles and freshman Christopher Dausman and sophomore Gene Hill 8-6 winners at three doubles.
VanWinkle was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at three singles and sophomore Anthony Vroon a 6-1, 6-2 winner at six singles. Freshman David Brown picked up Calvin's fifth and clinching point however, winning 6-3, 6-0 at five singles.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Spring Arbor in a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
MEN'S LACROSSE
MOUNT VERNON, IA - The Calvin men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-6 decision to Cornell College Saturday afternoon.
Cornell (2-5) outscored Calvin 11-2 in the first including 5-0 in the second quarter to gain control of the game.
Calvin (2-7) played Cornell on even terms in the second half as both teams scored four goals over the final 30 minutes of play.
Cornell held a 36-26 shots at goal advantage although the Knights outshot Cornell 13-6 in the fourth quarter.
Chris Griffin and Tyson Butler scored a pair of goals for the Knights while Jonathan VanderLaan and Nate Ray scored one goal apiece. Griffin also had one assist on the afternoon.
Butler had a team-high seven ground balls while senior Luke Bosscher had six.
Mitch Alexander had 10 saves in goal for the Knights.
Calvin will now prepare for its MIAA opener which will take place on Saturday when the Knights host Olivet at 1 p.m.
BASEBALL
Calvin's Saturday home baseball doubleheader with Hope was postponed by weather. It will be made up Monday (March 30) at Calvin at 2 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Calvin's Saturday home softball doubleheader with Alma was postponed by weather. It will be made up Monday (April 6) at Calvin at 3:30 p.m.
