Brett Stoughton Named Recipient of Elite 89 Award at NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships;
Calvin Set to Host NCAA III Finals in Women's Basketball

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

Brett Stoughton, a (sophomore) at Calvin College, is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2015 NCAA Division III (men's swimming and diving) Championship.

Stoughton, majoring in finance, currently carries a 4.0 GPA. Stoughton was presented with the award during the (NCAA III swimming and diving banquet/presentation) this evening in (Shenandoah, Texas).

Stoughton is the third athlete from Calvin to receive the honor with Melissa Oosterhouse receiving the award in women's tennis (2011) and Brad Wassink receiving the award in men's soccer (2011). Stoughton is one of eight individuals from the MIAA to be so honored. In addition to Calvin's three honorees, Kellen Beckwith of Olivet (swimming and diving, 2010 & 2011), Chelsea Wiese of Hope (swimming and diving, 2012), Michelle Kerr of Hope (women's cross country, 2013) and Jayne Kessel of Hope (volleyball, 2013 & 2014) have also received the award.

Stoughton is one of five members of the Calvin men's swimming and diving team set to compete at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships this week. Stoughton is scheduled to compete in the 200 and 400 medley relays as well as in the 200 butterfly.

"This is a wonderful honor for Brett," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "He works extremely hard in the classroom and in the pool. He is a terrific representative of Calvin College and we are all very proud of him for this accomplishment."

The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Division III women's basketball season will come to an end this weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with four of the top teams in the country converging at Calvin College to determine who will walk away as National Champions.
George Fox University, Montclair State University, Thomas More College, and Tufts University have all advanced to the NCAA III Finals which will be played at Calvin's VanNoord Arena.
All four teams were tops in their respective regions: Montclair State in the Atlantic, Thomas More in the Great Lakes, Tufts in the Northeast, and George Fox in the West. And, between the four teams, there are only a total of two losses, as Thomas More and George Fox come in undefeated, each with 31-0 records, while Montclair State and Tufts are both 30-1.
Of the four schools, George Fox is the only one to have previously won a national title. The Bruins did so in 2009. On the other hand, Montclair State, Thomas More, and Tufts are all looking for their first national title game berth in their respective program histories.
Thomas More and Tufts are scheduled to match-up at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, with George Fox and Montclair State to follow at 7:30 p.m. The winners advance to the National Championship game, to be played Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
