Calvin then got a pair of goals back in the fourth quarter.

The Crusaders scored the first goal of the period.

Sophomore Chris Griffin responded with two goals within two minutes to put Calvin on the board.
Capital added a final goal to close out the scoring.

CLERMONT, FL - The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, winning the opener 7-5 in eight innings and then dropping the nightcap 7-6.

In game one, Calvin scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to build a 7-3 lead. Mount St. Joseph scored a pair of runs in the bottom half but not enough to keep the Knights from gaining the win.

Sophomore Matt Kotva drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifie fly while junior Jeff Murdoch delivered a two-run RBI single and junior Jordan VanderWall belted a run-scoring single.

Senior Nate Schepers went six strong innings while freshman Ryan Stewart (1-0) came on in relief in the eighth to gain the win.

Senior Grant VanPutten, sophomore Colton Wolfe and sophomore Patrick Avila had two hits apiece.

In game two, Mount St. Joseph (4-3) took a 4-1 lead through three innings but the Knights fought back with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Kotva led off the fourth with a home run while Stewart also had an RBI single in the frame. In the fifth, senior Peter Cupery doubled to center and scored on a double by Wolfe. Wolfe later scored on a passed ball.

Mount St. Joseph tied the game back up with two runs in the top of the sixth and then scored the go-ahead run in the seventh in a run-scoring single to left.

Calvin placed the tying run on second with one out in the bottom of the seventh but failed to deliver the runner home.

Cupery (0-1) took the loss with Avila starting the game and going 3.2 innings. Freshman Kyle Vens and senior Austin Juza also saw time in relief.

VanPutten had two of Calvin's eight hits.

"Nate Schepers gave us a great start in game one and Ryan Steward made some big pitches out of the bullpen," said Calvin head coach John Rypel. "Offensively we put oursevles in scoring opportunities all game but finally took advantage as the game progressed. Game two showed that we have to do the little things well to get where we want to be as a ballclub."
