Women's Basketball to Host NCAA III Sectional;
Track and Field Athletes Compete at ONU Polar Bear Last-Chance Invite
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin College will be the host site of a four-team sectional round of the NCAA III Tournament March 13 and 14. In addition to Calvin, the other three competiting schools will be the University of Texas-Dallas, George-Fox University (OR) and DePauw (IN) University.
The University of Texas-Dallas (26-4) will take on George Fox (29-0) in one sectional semifinal game Friday while DePauw (26-2) will take on Calvin (29-0) in the other sectional semifinal. Friday's winners will meet in a national quarterfinal game Saturday. Game times and ticket information will be announced on Monday.
All three games will be played inside Calvin's Van Noord Arena.
Calvin advanced to the sectional round of the NCAA III Tournament this past weekend with victories over Baldwin-Wallace (80-66) and UW-Oshkosh (91-71). The Knights are making their fifth appearance in the sectional round including their fourth under current head coach John Ross.
Calvin will also be facing DePauw University for the third time in the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin claimed a 72-63 second round victory at DePauw in 2005 while the Tigers defeated the Knights 74-61 in a national quarterfinal game in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2007.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
A group of Calvin track and field athletes competed at a last-chance indoor meet hosted by Ohio Northern University on Saturday.
Freshman Ethan Valentine had a career-best indoor time in winning the 400 meters (49.45) while senior Erik Holstege matched a career-best time in placing secondin the 60 meter hurdles (8.30).
Sophomore Zac Nowicki won the 5,000 meters (15:04.90) while senior Stephen Tubergen took second in the mile run (4:20.87) and senior Steven Haagsma fourth in the 3,000 meters (8:37.32).
In the pole vault, junior Lucas Wolters cleared the bar at 14-8.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
A group of Calvin track and field athletes competed at a last-chance indoor meet hosted by Ohio Northern University on Saturday.
Calvin went 1-2 in the mile run with junior McKenzie Diemer winning the race in 5:03.70 while senior Kate Ardinger was second in 5:08.53.
In the 800 meters, freshman Caroline Boss had a career-best indoor time of 2:16.03 that was good for fourth place.
In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Lauren Strohbehn had a career-best time of 17:36.66 that was good for second place while senior Sarah Danner was fourth (17:43.44).
In the triple jump, freshman Jenna Dyksen had a career-best indoor leap of 36-9 3/4 that was good for second place.
On Friday, sophomore Bethany VanEck and senior Kelly Tuinenga competed in the pentathlon with VanEck finishing fourth with 2,794 points while Tuinenga was fifth with 2,789 points.
