PONTIAC, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the young season and also the first victory of head coach Kyle Hofstaedter's career on Friday afternoon, defeating Defiance College 11-5. Friday's game was played at the Pontiac Ultimate Soccer Arena.
Calvin led 6-3 at halftime and kept the pressure on the second half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 5-2 in the final two quarters.
"It feels real good to get a win," said Hofstaedter after the game. "We played sloppy at times and committed too many penalties but our guys dug down and fought for the win. I was proud of their effort. We have room for improvement obviously but this was a good result for our team."
Sophomore Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS) led the way with four goals while sophomore Chris Griffin (Howell/Hartland HS) had three goals. Freshman Tyson Butler (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ride HS) had two goals while senior Jonathon VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) had one goal apiece.
