Holstege Has Big Day One In Heptathlon at Christopher Newport Captains Invitational;
Calvin Spring Sports Coaches Offer Preseason Outlooks In Audio Podcasts
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Calvin College senior Erik Holstege returned to his home state and produced a power-packed afternoon at the Captains Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University Friday.
Competing on the opening day of the heptathlon competition, Holstege produced 2,861 points through four events as he sits second overall and in first place amongst collegiate competitors.
A native of Keswick, Virginia, Holstege (Monticello HS) clocked a time of 7.33 in the 60 meter dash, just a few-hundreths of a second off his career-best. He then posted the top long jump mark of the day, leaping to a distance of 22-5. In the shot put, he had the second-best mark of the 14 competitors with a throw of 41-1 3/4. He completed the day with a high jump of 6-1 1/4 which was the second-best high jump at the meet in the heptathlon.
Holstege will close out competition in the heptathlon on Saturday, competing in the 60 meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1000 meter run.
SOFTBALL
The 2015 Calvin softball season is quickly approaching. The Knights will open up their season on March 7 with a doubleheader at Franklin College (Ind.).
The Knights are under the direction of second-year head coach Tim Syrek who led the Knights to a 22-15 record and a berth in the 2014 MIAA Tournament. It marked Calvin's first 20-win season and its first appearance in the MIAA Tournament since 2005.
In the MIAA preseason coaches' poll released last week, Calvin was picked to finish fourth.
The Calvin Sports Information office recently caught up with Coach Syrek to look ahead to the 2015 season.

MEN'S LACROSSE
The 2015 Calvin men's lacrosse season will open in less than three weeks as the Knights will host Benedictine University of Illinois February 21.
The Knights are under the direction of first-year head coach Kyle Hofstaedter who comes to Calvin after previous stints as an assistant coach at Division II Rollins University and Division III Eastern University.
Hofstaedter played Division I lacrosse for St. Joseph's University (Pa.) and has been a member of the Dutch men's national lacrosse team for the past several years.
The Calvin Sports Information office recently caught up with Hofstaedter to look ahead to the 2015 season.

BASEBALL
The 2015 Calvin baseball season is quickly approaching. The Knights will be under new leadership this spring as John Rypel takes over the reins as head coach after spending the last four years as head coach of Gordon College (Mass).
Rypel takes over a Calvin team that finished 28-16 overall last year and in second place in the MIAA with an 18-10 conference record. The Knights later reached the MIAA Tournament Championship finals before falling to regular season champion Adrian.
The Calvin Sports Information office recently caught up with Coach Rypel and looked ahead to the 2015 season and talked about the growing Calvin baseball program.
