Swimming and Diving Teams Roll Into First Place at Calvin Quad;

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's swimming and diving team took a commanding first day lead at the Calvin Quadrangular Friday night in a competition that also includes teams from Albion, Carthage and Ohio Northern. Through one day of competition, Calvin has 357 points with Ohio Northern second with 238 points.
Calvin used depth and first place power to vault into the lead. The Knights picked up 53 points alone in the three-meter diving competition as freshman Michael Moentmann (Solon, OH/Solon HS) who took first place with a season-best score of 451.27 points. Sophomore Dirk Tanis (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was right behind with a season-best effort of 449.85 points while freshman Brian Bolton (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) was third with a season-best performance of 358.12.
In the 500 freestyle, Calvin took four of the top six spot led by junior Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) who won with a time of 4:45.89 while junior Caleb Meindertsma (Annondale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) was second (4:50.93). Senior Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was fourth (4:57.99) and freshman Skyler Fish sixth (Ionia/Ionia HS) 4:58.89.
In the 200 IM, Calvin went 3-4-5 with sophomore Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) third (2:00.75), freshman Tanner Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) fourth (2:01.74) and junior Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS) fifth (2:02.14).
In the 50 freestyle, junior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second (21.75) and sophomore Eli Holstege (Keswick, VA/Covenant HS) fourth (22.26).
Calvin also won a pair of relays Friday night as the quartet of Schroder, Holstege, Fish and Baumann won the 200 freestyle relay in a season-best time of 1:26.52 while the group of Tanner Vincent, Holstege, Stoughton and Schroder won the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:30.88.
Action continues on Saturday morning inside the Venema Aquatic Center at 10 a.m.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

Calvin took four of the top five spots in the three-meter diving competition, piling up 67 points. Freshman Nicole Langerak (Jenison/Jenison HS) won the competition with a season-best total of 432.15 points with freshman Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS) second with a season-best effort of 390.07 points, senior Rebecca Mumby (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) third with a season-best tally of 388.64 points and sophomore Hillary Glover (Wyoming/Calvin Christian HS) fifth with a season-best score of 331.94 points.
Calvin's top finish in the 500 freestyle came from freshman Ana Estrella (Hudsonville/Calvin Christian HS) who was fifth (5:35.93).
In the 200 IM, senior Lexi Scott (Dexter/Dexter HS) was second in 2:17.12.
In the 50 freestyle, Calvin went 1-2 with freshman Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning in a time of 24.94 while freshman Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) was second in 25.14.
Calvin also claimed first place in both relays Friday night. In the 400 medley relay, senior Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS), Scott, junior Alayna Gallegos (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville HS) and VanHarn took first in 4:10.99. In the 200 freestyle relay, Mattson, Estrella, sophomore Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS) and VanHarn took first in 1:40.09.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
The 189th meeting between Calvin and Hope in men's basketball will take place on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland. Hope leads the all-time series 98-90. A year ago Hope took both regular season meetings but Calvin came back to win the third meeting which took place in the MIAA Tournament Championship game.

One individual who will be making his 10th appearance in a Calvin-Hope men's basketball game is Calvin senior Jordan Brink who was recently featured by the Grand Rapids Press. A native of Dyer, Indiana, Brink has also been busy this year serving an internship with the Grand Rapids Drive - an affiliate of the NBA's Development league.

Two members of the Calvin men's soccer team have received D3soccer.com All-America honors. Senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) has been named to the D3soccer.com All-America first team for the second straight year while senior Sean Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) has been named to the D3soccer.com All-America second team. Later this month, recent Calvin College graduate Nicole Michmerhuizen will be the recipient of the NCAA's prestigious Top 10 Award. The NCAA recently featured Michmerhuizen and her academic research.
