WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Day 5 California Trip Diary
(Editor's note: The Calvin women's basketball team recently completed a trip to Northern California, which included a set of games hosted by UC-Santa Cruz Monday and Tuesday. Team members provided daily updates from the trip.)

By Calvin College Senior Breanna Verkaik

Last day in California for the team, and we took advantage of the beautiful sunshine in Santa Cruz! We started out the day heading over to the Banana Slugs' gym for a pregame shoot around and then we all got packed up into the minivans once again. For this road trip, we headed out to the Redwoods where we were hoping to find one of the famous banana slugs, but came up empty handed.

After our drive through the redwoods we then grabbed some lunch and headed back to the beach to soak up some rays and do some more exploring. A few us were even crazy enough to dive into the water, only to find out that it was a lot more sea-weedy than expected which took our minds off of the cold!

There were some beach volleyball games going on which also provided some entertainment. We were then able to walk along the pier off of the Santa Cruz beach and see more sea lions.

After the beach we went back to the hotel to chill for a while before the game. We ended up playing some board games to pass the extra time. We then took on the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs at 6pm and ended up with a good team win. We are now packing up one last time and ready to head out early tomorrow morning back to Michigan. It has been a wonderful trip and we are all so thankful for all the people who helped make it possible.

Go Knights!

DIRECTORS CUP FALL SPORTS STANDINGS UPDATE

The final set of Learfield Sports Directors' Cup fall sports standings have been released and Calvin College currently stands in sixth place with 255 points.
MIT (Mass.) leads the standings with 313.5 points with Williams (Mass.) second with 307 points, Christopher Newport (Va.) third with 298 points, Johns Hopkins (Md.) fourth with 284 points and Tufts (Mass.) fifth with 260.5 points.
Calvin picked up an additional 50 points from its men's soccer team that reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament. In Calvin's first fall sports ranking, the Knights received 83 points from its women's volleyball team that placed third at the NCAA III Championships. Calvin also received 69 points from its women's cross country team that placed ninth at the NCAA III Championships and 53 points from its men's cross country team that finished 21st at the NCAA III Championships.
The final set of fall sports standings includes the sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, football, men's water polo and women's field hockey.
The Learfield Directors' Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Directors' Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90 points. Third place is worth 85 points and fourth place finishes count for 80 points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
Competition will continue with the winter sports season and finish with the conclusion of the spring sports season in May.
A year ago, Calvin finished 25th in the final Division III standings with a total of 481.5 points.
Calvin is one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level. Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga.
