Calvin in 2nd Place in MIAA Commissioner's Cup Standings Through Fall Sports Season

VOLLEYBALL

Junior outside hitter Maggie Kamp has been chosen as the NCAA Division III Academic All-American of the Year award winner for women's volleyball. In addition, she has also received a spot on the Capital One Division III Academic All-America first team. Meanwhile, teammate Elise Biesboer has been named to the Capital One Division III Academic All-America third team.

A business marketing major and a studio art minor with a 3.91 G.P.A., Kamp was selected as the winner of the Capital One Division III Academic All-America(r) of the Year award for volleyball. Maggie joins her sisters, Rebecca and Lizzie Kamp, who also earned Capital One Division III Academic All-America(r) of the Year awards during their respective playing careers at Calvin. Rebecca Kamp won the award in 2011 and Lizzie Kamp received the honor 2012. The Kamps become the first sister trio to win the award.
The Capital One Division III Academic All-America(r) program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 Division III Academic All-America(r) teams program.

A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Kamp was recently named the 2014 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Player of the Year and picked up her second AVCA Division III All-American honor. The AVCA Player of the Year award was also hardware that her sisters, Rebecca (2011) and Lizzie (2012), earned during their careers at Calvin -- another first accomplished by the sisters.

Kamp led the Knights with an average of 4.42 kills per set this season, ranking 13th in Division III in the category. She posted an attack percentage of .289 in the campaign and contributed 2.69 digs per set. Kamp finished her junior campaign ranked 17th in Division III with 4.87 points per set. She led the Knights to a 31-4 record as Calvin advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament.

Kamp was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2014 NCAA Division III Regional in Kenosha, Wis., as she led the Knights to the national quarterfinals. In a four-set victory versus Carthage in the regional final, she tallied 14 kills, 19 digs, three service aces and three block assists.
A three-year starter at outside hitter for Calvin, she helped lead the Knights to the 2013 NCAA Division III Volleyball National Championship. She collected a career-high 27 kills in the national championship match and was recognized as the 2013 tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Like Kamp, Biesboer is also from the Chicago suburbs as she hails from Elmhurst, Illinois. A graduate of Timothy Christian High School, Biesboer recently completed a standout senior campaign as Calvin's starting libero.

From her libero position this fall, Biesboer averaged a team-leading 4.32 digs-per-set and also racked up a team-high 52 service aces.

She was a two-time MIAA Specialty Player of the Week selection and was named to the Wittenberg Fall Classic All-Tournament team. She was later named to the All-MIAA second team and was an AVCA Division III Great Lakes All-Region honorable mention selection.

In a four-set win over Hope on October 22, she racked up a career-high 31 digs and then tallied 28 digs in a four-set win over Trine in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on November 7.

A three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a six-time member of the Calvin Dean's List, Biesboer carries a 3.84 grade point average while majoring in biology. She plans to attend medical school next winter.
Calvin has now had six athletes named Capital One Academic All-Americans of the Year. Other Calvin student-athletes to have received the award include Carissa Verkaik in women's basketball (2013), Joel Klooster in men's cross country/track and field (2002) and Chris Knoester in men's basketball (1994).

Calvin has had three of its scholar-athletes receive Capital One Academic All-America honors this fall as Travis Vegter was a second team selection in men's soccer last month.

Calvin has now had its scholar-athletes receive 110 Capital One Academic All-America citations. Calvin's total of 110 ranks in the top-30 all-time amongst All NCAA and NAIA institutions at any level. Calvin also ranks eighth on the all-time NCAA Division III list. In addition, Calvin has recorded 79 Capital One Academic All-America citations since 2000 which also ranks 11th for all NCAA and NAIA levels.
