Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Open Calvin Winter Invitational - Meindertsma Sets School Record in 1650;
Taylor Ten Harmsel Named to NSCAA Division III All-Central Region Third Team in Women's Soccer
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin opened competition at the three-day Calvin Winter Invitational on a record-setting note as junior Caleb Meindertsma (Annandale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) took second in the 1,650 freestyle with a school record time of 15:57.72, shattering his own school mark of 15:58.55 set a year ago. In addition, Meindertsma's time is an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time.
Meindertsma was one of two Calvin swimmers to score in the top eight in the event for the Knights as junior Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) was eighth in 16:48.55.
Calvin also placed two of its 800 freestyle relay teams in the top six. The quartet of freshman Tanner Vincent (Novi/Novi HS), Venema, junior Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) and junior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) took fifth in a time of 6:56.49 while the group of Meindertsma, freshman Skyler Fish (Carson City/Ionia HS), senior Travis Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) and senior Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took sixth in a time of 6:58.63.
After two events, Calvin sits in second place in the team standings with 82 points. Grand Valley State leads the way with 164 points.
Competition continues on Friday morning with prelims set for 10 a.m. and finals set for 6 p.m.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin women's swimming and diving team opened competition at the three-day Calvin Winter Invitational Thursday evening inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Ceejae VanHorn (Allegan/Allegan HS) scored in the 1,650 freestyle, placing 16th in a time of 18:52.10.
In the 800 freestyle relay, Calvin picked up a ninth and 10th place finish. Its team of junior Megan Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) and freshman Klara Oh (Kent, WA/Home Schooled) took ninth in 7:56.84 while the team of senior Alex Dhaenens (Howell/Howell HS), freshman Ana Estrella (Hudsonville/Calvin Christian HS), senior Lexi Scott (Dexter/Dexter HS) and senior Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS) took 10th in a time of 7:57.92.
After two events, Calvin sits in sixth place in the team standings with 33 points. Northern Michigan leads the way with 113 points.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
For the second straight year, Taylor Ten Harmsel of the Calvin women's soccer team has received NSCAA Division III All-Central Region honors.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Ten Harmsel has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Continental Tire Division III All-Central Region third team.
A midfielder, Ten Harmsel tallied three goals, five assists and 11 points this fall. Ten Harmsel was also named to the 2014 All-MIAA first team for the third straight year.
A year ago, Ten Harmsel was named to the NSCAA All-Central Region second team.
The Calvin women's soccer team finished the 2014 season with an overall record of 7-10-2 and placed sixth in the MIAA regular season standings with a 6-8-2 conference mark.
