Volleyball Captures Share of MIAA Regular Season Title With Win at Olivet;
Travis Vegter Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team in Men's Soccer;
Soccer Teams To Feature Breast Cancer Awareness Theme Saturday

OLIVET - The top-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team clinched a share of the 2014 MIAA regular season title with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 victory at Olivet Friday night.

Calvin is now 25-3 overall and shares the MIAA crown for the third time in five years with Hope. The MIAA title is the fifth straight for Calvin and the seventh under current head coach Amber Warners.

Hope will be the top seed for the MIAA Tournament and will host the semifinals and finals next weekend. Calvin will face third-seeded Trine in a semifinal next Friday at 5:30 p.m. Hope will face fourth-seeded Alma in the second semifinal Friday at 7:30 p.m. The semifinal winners will meet in the championship final next Saturday at Hope at 4 p.m.

In its win over Olivet on Friday night, Calvin hit .333 as a team. Junior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) tallied a match-high 13 kills along with a pair of service aces. Sophomore Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) got loose for eight kills, four block assists and a hitting percentage of .421. Senior Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) also had six kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

Senior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) tallied 10 digs and four service aces while freshman setter Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) amassed 30 assists and four service aces.

"We are happy to win a league championship. It is something we do not take for granted," said Warners. "We had another good team effort tonight. I thought our serving in particular was strong. Our goal now is to continue to play for every point next week when we play Trine."

MEN'S SOCCER

For the second consecutive year, Calvin College senior Travis Vegter has been named to the Division III Capital One Academic All-District team in men's soccer. He is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.
Calvin is a member of District 6 which includes the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter is a biology major. He was a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll a year ago.
Vegter is in the midst of a sensational senior soccer campaign as he has scored 21 goals along with seven assists for a total of 49 points. He currently ranks third on the Calvin career list for goals and points.

He is currently ranked third nationally in points and goals.

Vegter has helped the Calvin men's soccer team produce an overall record of 16-2-0 this year as the Knights are ranked seventh in one national poll and sixth in another. A four-year starter, Vegter has also helped Calvin record its eighth consecutive MIAA regular season title. The Knights are currently 13-0 in league play heading into their regular season finale against Olivet on Saturday.

A biology major at Calvin, Vegter was named a Capital One Academic All-American a year ago as well as an NSCAA Scholar All-American.
2014-15 Capital One Academic All-District(r) Men's and Women's Soccer Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.

The Calvin men's and women's soccer teams will feature a Breast Cancer Awareness theme on Saturday for a doubleheader against Olivet.
The women's game will kick off the twinbill at noon with the men's game to follow at 2:30 p.m.
The doubleheader will feature a Breast Cancer Awareness theme with activities promoting the event scheduled.
Fans will have the opportunity to pledge donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation by pledging dollar amounts of total shots, goals or saves or by a single set donation.

"This is a very important cause," said Calvin director of athletics Dr. Jim Timmer. "This is a disease that has touched many families including some associated with our men's and women's soccer programs. The month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month but Saturday (Nov. 1) was the only opportunity we had to involve both of our teams. We are looking forward to the day and asking our fans to participate."

The MIAA title is the 21st overall in Calvin women's volleyball history. The Knights have won more league crowns in volleyball than any other league school.
