Cross Country Teams Run at Eastern Michigan Classic;
Swimming and Diving Teams Compete Against Division II Foes

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The development squads for the Calvin men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Eastern Michigan Fall Classic on Friday afternoon. The competition was unscored for competing teams.

Both the men's and women's races were 5K competitions.

The Calvin men's team placed seven runners in the top 80.

The top finisher for the Knights was junior Landon Potts (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) in 53rd place (16:27) with sophomore Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) 57th (16:35). Sophomore Mason Swartz (Allegan/Allegan HS) was 62nd in 16:43 while sophomore Matt Plantinga (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 68th (16:51). Sophomore Nick Aukerman (Ann Arbor/Pioneer HS) was 69th in 16:52 and freshman Hendrik Vermeulen (Bright's Grove, ON/St. Christopher) 71st in 16:52 and freshman Tony Brookhouse (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) 80th in 17:13.

On the women's side, senior Marly May (Naperville, IL/Naperville North HS) led the Knights by finishing 72nd in 20:15. Junior Lora Huizingh (Byron Center/South Christian HS)was 79th in 20:49, freshman Megan Murray (Greeley, CO/Frontier Academy) 80th in 20:56. Freshman Marissa McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) was was 89th in 21:28, senior Lisa Schultz (Caledonia/Caledonia HS) 95th in 21:56 and sophomore Samantha Bandstra (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS) 97th in 22:16.

The Calvin cross country program will now prepare to host the MIAA Championships on November 1 at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin men's swimming and diving team welcomed Division II Grand Valley State University to the Venema Aquatic Center Friday night and dropped a 177-65 decision to the Lakers.

A highlight for Calvin came in the 50 freestyle as junior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) cruised through the field for a victory in a time of 22.03. Schroder also turned in a strong second place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.32.

Other second place finishes came from junior Andrew Vanderlei (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.91), sophomore Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) in the 200 butterfly (2:01.62) and in the 400 freestyle relay as the quartet of junior Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS), junior Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS), senior Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and freshman Skylar Fish (Bedford, NH/Bedford HS) clocked in with a time of 3:18.14.

Muma also added a third place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:48.69), Stoughton was third in the 200 IM (2:02.70) and freshman Tanner Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) was third in the 200 backstroke (2:00.93).

In the diving competition, sophomore Dirk Tanis (Holland/Holland Christian HS) put up a strong score on the one-meter board, placing fifth with a score of 243.30.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts MIAA opponent Albion in a dual meet at 1 p.m.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin women's swimming and diving team welcomed Division II Grand Valley State University and Hillsdale to the Venema Aquatic Center Friday night for a triangular. Grand Valley State came out on top with 74 points, followed by Hillsdale with 60 points and Calvin with 56 points.

Freshman Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a big night for Calvin, taking second in the 50 freestyle (24.98) and 100 free (53.98) while anchoring Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team that took second in a tie of 3:44.98. The relay also included sophomore Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS), freshman Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) and senior Alex Dhaenens (Howell/Howell HS).

Senior Lexi Scott (Dexter/Dexter HS) took third in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.16) while junior Alayna Gallegos was third in the 200 butterfly (2:15.52).

Calvin's first-year divers sparkled on the three-meter board as freshman Nicole Langerak (Jenison/Jenison HS) took second with a total of 247.50 points while freshman Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS) was third with a total of 235.65 points.
