Women's Soccer Ties Alma 1-1

ALMA - The Calvin women's soccer team opened the second half of its MIAA scheduled with a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Alma Wednesday afternoon. It marked the third overtime game in the last four meetings between the two league foes including the second this year.
Calvin (5-6-1 overall, 4-4-1 MIAA) appeared poised to sneak away with a 1-0 victory as the Knights scored with 5:53 remaining on a strike by sophomore Allie Corp (Livonia/Stevenson HS). Corp's shot came off a rebound off a shot originally taken by teammate Sam Osterhaven (Caledonia/South Christian HS).
The hosts Scots (8-3-1 overall, 6-2-1 MIAA) refused to fold and broke through for the equalizer, scoring with just 3:10 left in regulation. The goal was scored on a header by Alma's Brianna Russell.
With the momentum on its side, Alma ripped a pair of shots in the first overtime but Calvin freshman goalkeeper Jenna Shelton (Bloomfield Hills/Troy Intersect HS) was up to the task, making a pair of saves.
Alma came up with three more shots in the second overtime before Calvin freshman Camie Rietberg (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) came close in the dying embers of match, whistling a shot just over the crossbar.
Calvin finished with a 21-17 shots at goal advantage led by junior Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) who fired five shots at goal.
Shelton was credited with five saves in goal for the Knights.
Currently lodged in a three-way tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings,Calvin will travel to Trine University on Saturday for a match slated to start at noon.
